View Full Version : dinner and training time clash

This is my normal daily routine:

6:30 - get home from work
7:15 - go to training
7:45 - start training
9:30 - get home from training

I also take a protein shake at 4:30 before I leave work.

When should I have dinner? inbetween work and going to training or after i get home?

If I had a decent sized dinner at 6:45-7:15, would that be too much before training, too much to digest?

I would assume after 9:30 would be a wee too late and I'm concerned I would have a lack of energy for training if I don't eat when I get home after work.

I will also be starting a new training regime soon, taking up BJJ from 6:30 till 7:30 (which means straight to training after work then won't get any time to eat until 9:30). Should I fuel up massively at 4:30 before I leave work? I pretty much won't eat from 4:30 till 9:30 if I start BJJ...

Suggestions?

Food should be fuel for your workout.. So you would schedule it around your workouts.. If I eat anything that has carbs or protein, I am usually headed to the gym. Drink shakes according to the directions or according to your personal trainer/coach.

I take supplements in the morning with oatmeal. I try to eat before I workout, but I always make sure to eat 5 meals a day, and 6 on training days.. I don't eat after 9:00 PM. I try to schedule my meals 20 - 30 minutes before workouts. I know it sounds lame, but I carry a big ass lunch box for my Chicken breasts, broccoli, salads, and potatoes..

Fuel up massively?.. I wouldnt overeat and get all bloated n ****.. but some good carbs and protein are always gonna do you good..

Maybe what you should do is learn more about your body type and find some targets for yourself.. That way, you know what you are shooting for, and that will allow you to schedule your time around eating as fuel to help your workout.

I'm asking when to fit in my 6 meals, not what my 6 meals should be, I know what body type I am and what my targets are.

If I fuel up heaps at 4:30 I should be digested enough to not be bloated by the time i hit my 6:30 to 9:00 training, i usually get hungry if I dont eat at 6:30 and don't want that to happen when I'm about to start 2hrs of training.

fuel up at 4:30 and eat a banana and a glass of milk on the way to the gym.

Anecdotal, non-expert opinion:

I eat nuts, a banana, maybe some cheese and meat, and other high-protein snacks in that time-frame. It's enough to tell my stomach to shut up, but not enough to qualify as a meal or to weigh me down. If I eat a meal then I'm miserable during class. It's OK to be a little hungry before training, right? I forget I'm hungry as soon as I start working, then at the end of class I'm deathly starving and wolf down an energy bar or protein shake.

I have a similar schedule but am not able to eat dinner before training. I've had to start eating dinner late at night a couple times a week. Usually between 9 and 9:30. I have not instantly become a giant fat whale like I thought I might. Eating late at night wasn't as bad as I thought. I think it is over-hyped as being super bad for you.

I've been taking 6-8pm ish Martial arts classes for the last 7 years or so. I ALWAYS eat AFTER I get back, so around 9ish. It has just become my regular supper time and my body has adjusted fine. It's actually wierd when I go to my folks place because supper was always at 6pm. The only concern with this is what time you go to bed. Eating too soon before going to bed makes it hard to sleep, so I like to have 2-3 hours in between.

If I have a class at 6 I try to eat something at 4, and no later. Usually some toast or granola bars. Otherwise I get bloated during class and its gross. If you are doing this, have a decent sized lunch around 12-1, and then a light snack around 4. Training on an empty stomach sucks.

Sleeping is when you do most of your recovery. Eating right before bed give you nutrients to recover with. Something high protein right before sleeping can facilitate anabolism at night, or so I've heard.

I usually eat a bowl of cottage cheese with some jelly before sleeping.

Maybe someone has a study one way or another, but doesn't a full belly => endorphins => easier time getting to sleep?

For me eating big before going to sleep leads to terrible sleep and bad dreams.

+1
If I eat before bed I end up with the worst nights sleep...i usually try to leave about 2ish hours after tea before bed

And in terms of eating before training, i usually find a sandwich (tuna, or chicken etc) tends to keep the hunger away during training...then i eat a smaller dinner after...
