Besides I'm leaving the area in 3-4 months and I'm going to start doing some real training. So why bother jepordizing a relationship that won't be inhibiting my growth in a short period of time.

That statement sort of begs question as to why you would continue to patronize (and it's important to remember that definition of the relationship) such a teacher.

I understand that a lot of places have students buy packages, so if you're locked into something like that and you draw some benefit out of your training, then I can see why you might stay.

I wouldn't presume to tell you where or how to train, but a lot of us have spent large chunks of time and money training with instructors we wish we hadn't. That revelation often comes through the miraculously ill-timed benefit of hindsight. (That very reality may even have been the impetus for the creation of Bullshido.)

It was actually browsing this forum some years ago that led me to my current training which has changed my life for the better (cue: stirring '80's denouement music). I stopped smoking and am in way better shape than I was in my 20's. (i will let you all decide on whether I've learned anything skillwise)

Again, I'm not trying to impel you to drop your current training. Just know that, as a PAYING CUSTOMER, you always have choices.

Also - these Throwdowns are basically a meet-up. They are not a competition, as such. People generally decide on the spot to spar or roll if they haven't already committed to doing so via the forum.

Mainly though, it's about making fun of one dude's horrific, pedophilic dirtstache. Very little else goes on.

Yes. There's a separate attendance thread, um...here June nyc throwdown attendance Thread - No BS Martial Arts (http://www.bullshido.net/forums/showthread.php?t=86275)

P.S. - Since I'm coming in from out of town, plus I'm just a charming guy, y'all better come out for a beer afterward.

I know its shitty to stay with a school that has parameters around my skill level and development but this really is the best thing in the area. There is nothing else reasonable within a 20 minute drive. I think there is a closer tang-so-do school and a ninjitsu class, neither of which I would touch with my six foot bo staff. The judo and kyokushin is 35 and 50 minutes away respectively and I simply don't have the time and energy to do that much driving.
Besides, its not as if I'm wasting my time there. We have a couple highly skilled instructors ( I think one was a 2nd alternate for wrestling in the 84 olympics), and with 200 people in the dojo I can find some good guys to spar and roll with, which I make sure to do every time I'm there. Just this sunday, we rustled up some boxing gloves, did slipping drills, and cooled down with no-gi-grappling. For right now I'm content to train in a less-than-perfect dojo, knowing that when I leave to travel this october I can branch out.

Just to clarify in an earlier post of mine, I shouldn't have said a judo brown belts ground skills, just his submission skills. I'm weak with pinning, positioning and rolling.

Hmm, sounds strange, you and 1.2 are both saying that your instructors don't appreciate cross training.... sounds like some BS to me.
And sure you can always find people to roll with, the question is, will you learn something from it?
Going to other schools is a great experience, for your MA and for you as a person, don't let people tell you otherwise.

I live in Accord, NY 12404.

The school is in New Paltz, NY. It is upstate, so things are a bit spread out.

I know that crosstraining is the **** and plan on doing a shitload. Heres my plan. I just worked for 6 months while living with my parents. I have alot saved up. I have no commitments next year so I am considering two things. A prolonged road trip where I would stop at any dojo that would have me along the way, kinda to get a feel for styles that would suit my goals, kinda not to let my skills atrophy. and a 3-4 month stint in NYC where I could work part time and train daily. I'm particularly looking at kyokushin and sambo schools.

My TKD instructor starting giving me **** about cross training when I told him that my Judo instructor wanted me to start training for my bb test. I explained to him that I was doing judo before I started at the school. That and if he wanted me to start an MMA part of the curriculum, I would have to cross train. That changed his mind.

Thanks are due also to the lovely ladies who came, took video, and generally brought up the level of sophistication in our motley crew.

My lady friend took some moving pictures of us rasslin' and rough-housing with ye olde gloves. I have some gi work with Jack (long), a dupe vid of the stick work, and footage of me and Steve rolling no-gi, plus him sharing a leglock defense and a no-gi pass.

Youtube, hurry UP!

Oh god I don't know how to work the picture upload.

Does this work?

There we go. First we have the lovely ladies, second is Jack doing his impression of an octopus murdering me, and third is my beautiful, power-bearded mug, about to get punched by a man much smaller than me, who resembles a rodent that stores food in its cheeks.
