Hi Everyone,

This is my first post and i'd like to start off asking for your opinions, for a Boxing/Muay Thai training method of punching tires.
Basically these tires are hung from the ceiling ala heavy bag, except with three tires attached to eachother. It is much heavier and tougher than punching a normal heavy bag, and is supposedly more effective at increasing power.

Have any of you used this training method to increase punching power? Does it work? I know some K-1 fighters train with this.

Seriously though, are the tires stacked vertical (like they would be on a car) or stacked up horizonal (flat on their sides)? Are you supposed to wear bag gloves while punching? Boxing gloves? Can you kick them without tearing up your shins?

The rubber that is the tire will probably rip something, most likely your skin.

It might be "more effective" than a heavy bag, but I would assume that your not at a hardcore enough stage to even consider more harsh alternative ways to train. Just stick with a heavy bag before you hurt yourself.

It's like the kids who just started Muay Thai, yes I know they use to kick banana trees over in Thailand but don't do it.

Yeah, I've seen it around in Thailand. I don't like it personally.

The tyres are stacked one on the other and held up by ropes.

I don't get why to do it. Just get a heavier bag? When you hit something, energy is created in the strike, that energy has to be released somewhere, and it will look for the weakest point to release through. So, if the target is more solid than yourself (think punching a brick wall) the energy will not go into the target, yet will instead will exit through weak points in your own body; easy way to damage or break joints.

Thus, a bag is probably a safer option, as it is easy to transfer punch power into the bag safely. If you want power, get a heavier bag and train more...

Well i assumed you kick it as well since you are training muay thai, if you cant kick the tyres but dont have a heavy bag, then what are you suppose to kick? I don't see how a tyre setup is more effectiev than a bag setup if you can't kick it.

And for the alternative if your been sarcastic: You can't wear gloves on your shins.

Yeah, but you only get the big points when you make the car explode from all the flutter kicks you do to the body.

I've seen it used for eskrima. It makes sense there since the tires could probably take stick and sword beatings better than a heavybag could.

Did it never occur to you that although Muay Thai uses 8 limbs, they work on them seperatly at times?

Well, I didn't think id actually need to explicitly state that i'd be wearing gloves, but yes, i would be(shin pads for shins). Also, I forgot to mention the one I saw has extra layer of padding with duct tape all over it providing further cushion (not too thick though).

Last_Samurai, thanks for your input. I can def see how one might be more susceptible to injury using tires as practice if using bad form.

Onr3e, you can actually use it for kicks as well (I have done it), but i doubt it would help increase kicking strength. I was thinking of setting one up because I have spare car tires, and it would be cheaper than buying a heavy bag (plus it'd be fun to set up).
