As many of you know, I trained for approx 8 to 9 months at the Gracie Academy.

I enjoyed my training, and believe in the techniques. I used to hound my instructors about learning more, and wanting to train even more than I was currently, approx 5 to 7 times a week. I got bored going over the same techniques every day. The good news was before I left, I was told I was allowed to train with the more advanced students, or the intermediate class. I would sit in some of their classes and see that the beginners class was that, just for beginners.

I moved back up to Vancouver, Canada last month. Last Thursday, I took my first class with Marcus Soares. It was a 2 hour class versus the 1 hour I was used too, and it contained the first 30 minutes with some heavy polymetric and aerobic excercises. I was dying near the end, I can still feel the soreness in my trunk muscles doing those chinese pushups, or hindu pushups as they are more commonly known ala Furey. I had no strength, that when it came to rolling later, it was all 100 percent technique.

I rolled with one guy, who has been training a little longer than me, being that I was so tired, I mounted no heavy defense or offense, but he was just all over me. Couldn't get an upper body submission, but got me numerous times with Knee bars. Which, since I was never taught, I had no clue defending.

He was also, probably, for being around 190lbs, the heaviest fucker ever on top of me when he did Cem Kilos, or 100 Kilo mount aka sidemount. I asked him, how the Hell did he do that. He showed me not to be at a 90 degree angle on your opponnent, and be betwen side and north south. With your left arm, grab under opponents arm and grab the middle of their belt, with the right hand, grab his gi pants, go up to toes and drive in... I felt his and heard his voice significantly change when I did it to him.

I asked specifically at the last seminar about putting cem kilos on an opponent, and was not given this information.

The techniques taught last Thursday by Marcus...

1. Being under the north south, colar choke reversal. Edited to add... Clock choke from under the north/south reversal
2. Omo plata
3. Double Arm Bar from guard
4. Sleeve choke with knees
5. Shoulder lock if they straigthen their arm from omo plata

We spent so much time drilling each and every technique, I can do them in my fucking sleep.

Don't get me wrong, I could hang with these guys, I know it. I just couldn't after beating my ass with all the polymetrics before.

Just unbelieveable. I learned good base from the Gracie Academy, but I am lacking in techniques. Those that I know now, I know very well, how hard is it to defend a technique you don't know? It's extremely fucking hard.

Rant done.

this is a good post people should read it.

In general do you think these guys are better conditioned than Gracies' guys? And was there a seperate conditioning class or something at GJJ?

I like the training technique of wearing your ass out before sparring/rolling we do the same thing. It actually cuts down on injuries becasue you can't KO most people if you can't lift your arms!

My first judo instructor would teach as a technqiue, any technique and for that whole class that was all we did, that one technique.
We did aganist a grab, punch, grap n punch, 2 hand grap, knife attcak, two person attack,etc...
We left that class knowing the ins and outs of that technique.
Sometimes the simplest ways of teach are the best.

Sounds good to me but what do I know?

Anthony,

What do you think is the reason for the pace of your training at the Gracie Academy?

Did they not teach you the techniques because you personally weren't ready for them, or is it their policy to focus on a small number of techniques for a long time for everyone?

Could this be a reason why it is supposed to take so long (I've heard up to 15 years) to get a black belt?

What is the typical rank progression like at your new school, is it any faster? I've heard of some BJJ schools granting BB after 4 years.

Punisher,

Considering that knee bars are not allowed in white belt competitions, I can see that reasoning why they are not taught. However, I believe you should know a technique to defend against it.

Omega knows my game pretty well, I'm sure if you ask him if I am ready for new techniques he would answer in the affirmative. Hell, he's taught me quite a bit himself.

I couldn't answer for sure why the reasoning is towards holding back teaching techniques. I can only speak for myself when I say that learning those 5 new techniques only helped my game.

I only saw conditioning classes right before a competition. We would roll to warm up.

sounds like a typical jits school

youll notice alot of the advanced students will come in at least 15- 20 min late in order to miss the warm up. they are usually tough.
