The Obama administration will seek to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 during the Bush administration, Attorney General Eric Holder said today.

"As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons," Holder told reporters.

Holder said that putting the ban back in place would not only be a positive move by the United States, it would help cut down on the flow of guns going across the border into Mexico, which is struggling with heavy violence among drug cartels along the border.

"I think that will have a positive impact in Mexico, at a minimum." Holder said at a news conference on the arrest of more than 700 people in a drug enforcement crackdown on Mexican drug cartels operating in the U.S.

It shouldn't be surprising, "liberals" (anything but) believe that Government is the means to solve all social problems. They fail to grasp the fact that the Second Amendment was put there as the ultimate remedy for keeping unwanted people out of their bedrooms, in all senses of the phrase.

The activist left thinks government should solve all social problems.

The activist right thinks it should solve all moral problems.

The radical middle never looked so good.

We really need an effective libertarian party.

It'll have to be built from the ground up. NO WAY is it going to succeed on a national level without deep and broad grassroots support.

Uhh, if this is true, it's a very bad tactical thing for Obama to do since it would make him lose a lot of popular support. It would also validate a lot of the crazy far right things that the NRA has been saying about him. I think I'd wait for additional information/confirmation myself just because it seems like an extraordinarly counter-productive self-defeating thing for him to do.


EDIT: Also, if the prospect of the Obama administration re-instating the "assault weapons ban" bothers you, IMO instead of complaining about it here, the best and most productive thing to do would be to fax or email the president telling him that you are strongly opposed. That would be the most constructive.

EDIT 2: I notice that the article title is slightly misleading. The title is that Obama seeks assault weapons ban, whereas the content of the article is that Holder seems to be the one who wants it the most.
