Aer0smooth I was just messing with you. I would never return to a TKD school unless it was 1.) To spar with them or 2.) I had a kid and wanted him to take something before he starts to learn some real good stuff cause he'd be too young.
I know there is an ATA school in my area, but just never felt like going there since I know what TKD is. However there are some Shaolin-Do schools I wouldn't mind visiting.

hmm, we have a ATA guy at our university club now (i think our first one...or maybe second). anyway, since he's a "black belt" he can really do whatever he wants. which basically means sitting in the split machine, doing his form, rinse and repeat for 2 hours.... i keep asking him if he wants to drill, or spar, or **** anything at all. he always backs down, wtf?

we as martial artists ge ta bad rap all of the time as being violent people just wanting to fight therefore we need to work hard to combat that stereotype.
Is that some kind of joke? The sterotype I see is that martial artists are a bunch of weak, uncoordinated geeks who like to pretend to do ballet in their pajamas. Why don't we combat that stereotype instead?

i have started to do krav to sup;ement my training. i understand the hostility toward the ATA it is rooted in the fact that they have an awesome business plan. all you need to open up a martial arts school is a business liscence. you dont need any certifiable proof that you are a real martial artist. all black belts as i can say again are not created equal we have this idea in our minds that if you are a black belt you are some kind of killing machine. well you and i both know that is not the truth. an instructor in the ata is given allot of power over the program that he or she runs therefore if you want to run a hard core group and a group that just wants to do MA to relax then you have that perogative. not everyone wants to go hard and i believe that there is a place for that. there is also a place for those who want to go hard and hit hard and be hit hard. lets be honest about it even the top fighters in the world can only go hard for so long. the lifespan for a professional fighter is not that long maybe five seven years and they cant fight anymore. i agree with you the sparring done in the ata is not true to combat it is great for learning timing speed focus and control but not much else. if you want to learn self preservation go learn Krav maga. lets be honest about it if you are a judoka there are allot of throws taht are useless on the street but there are some that are very applicable. i am not one to say that the ATA is the only thing out there. i am merely saying that i have found a great school that does it right. i recently went to a training camp and found out what you guys have been saying and i honestly can tell you that there are allot of instructors that are not running their schools the proper way. i for one am not going to be a money grubbing mcdojang man.

Everyone should do it this way. At the university I attend (Johns Hopkins), my TSD instructor started "fight club" and holding semi to full contact sparring open to all the styles/clubs here on the campus (WTF TKD, ITF TKD, Shotokan, Capoeria, BJJ, Wing Chun). So far only WTF TKD, Wing CHun, and one member of Capoeira have shown up.
Last night my instructor fought the WTF TKD club's highest ranked/most experienced person as well as the team's newly appointed captain.
He beat the **** out of them both.
I suggest similar treatments of TKD practitioners everywhere - find them and beat the **** out of them. If you happen across one that you can't beat the **** out of, shake his hand and tell him good luck in the olympics, and when he turns to walk away hit that tkd motherfuker with a glass bottle or soemthin cuz **** u cant have good tkders walkin around... what wud ppl think?
no but seriously, i think the best way to get TKD ppl who wanna fight to wake the **** up is to beat them down.
also dont ask me for video from this week's ass kicking - most of the WC guys didnt come this week (they have all the AV ****).

I think it has been said a million times, but the real problem most people have with the ATA isn't their business plan per se...it's that they give people a false sense of security about their ability to defend themselves and that could lead to people getting hurt. If the ATA just marketed itself as fun, sport-oriented fitness for the entire family, I'm sure you would see less rancor directed towards them. However, they teach people to believe that what they are learning is effective.
As always, there are exceptions. One ATA instructor locally is a huge MMA fan and has fought in 5 Amateur MT fights. He knows TKD in itself is useless, but he teaches his classes the MT round kick instead of the TKD kick. He teaches his classes basic ground fighting...let me tell you...nothing is more hysterical than watching the "Tiny Tigers"...the 3-5 year old kids taking each other downs with single legs and getting the mount.
This guy knows whats up...what is awesome is since the ATA schools are always nice...myself, a BJJ guy, and a wrestler train in his nice school on some nice mats for 7 or 8 hours a week pounding each other silly and training with him when there are no classes. Good stuff.
