Goju-Joe:
One of my buddies in Isshinryu did Kyokushin in Japan while teaching English. He said that the kata was largely for testings (blech) and as a cool-down exercise. I like the latter--do some historically significant visualization and resistance-less training to round out the two hours of makiwara, conditioning and kumite.

Most of my kata is either at the beginning or ending of class.
BTW I don't want to turn this into a kata thread just pointing out Machida still does it

Phhhhfh, what malarkey. What next, "Tae Kwon Do Is Useful For More Than Just Looking Cool Month"? "Wing Chun Just Might, Theoretically, Not Suck Under Certain Circumstances And Planetary Alignments Month"? Possibly even "Kata Are Almost As Useful As Tits On A Nun Month"?
All stupidity aside, a great big OSU to all our gi-friends in their punching of organs, and I look forwards to getting back to Kyokushin/Kyokushin-derivative once I figure out where I'm moving to, provided there happens to be one in the vicinity. In the mean time, delicious flashy Korean Shotokan.
Hell, I'd even settle for more Shorin-ryu Shidokan, provided it had sparring.
Most of what I'm seeing that's positive from the point sparring seems to be the explosiveness and decisive takedowns/strikes from the outer range.

I wonder what would happen if there were an MMA division with 30 second rounds. Judge's decision nearly every time, and there'd sure be a lot of...gosh, I'm not an MMA encyclopedia, but what was that match where both guys got single collar ties and played punch-and-elbow-to-the-face for two minutes straight? That would happen a lot. But I wonder if a drastically shorter time period would reward some good things.
Everything else about point karate is stupid, BTW. Don't get me wrong. The guard, the bouncing, the turning around after a single strike, the shouting, the ridiculous follow-ups on the ground, the decisionmaking, the ridiculous strikes that become popular...wow.

(I am not one therefor I will not be representing.)
Aye Aye Sir!
Fellow standing was fighting with a broken thumb and two or three cracked ribs that he incured in the eliminations.

As I have tried to explain to people before, being an ex Shotokan guy myself, it wasn't Karate that I didn't like, but rather the emphasis on light contact point sparring, pressure point BS (i.e. hit this and this and this to KILL) and general lack of fighting readiness that I felt (more a comment on my school than the style). That said, much respect to all those who train alive and hard. Keep it up, and keep real karate going.

Cant wait to see how "Wing Chun Rules" month is gonna go..
Yo **** that. XMA Rules month?!! :icon_sad:
Take a 2. Dan KARATEKA and put him against the AVERAGE boxer, and i'll put my money on the boxer.
IMHO
But still hats off to the full-contact karatekas ...
I know many of them would beat me easily...
