I know there's a place up here on the north shore, I just need to find out the price for renting it. BTW, I have a couple questions; 1. Should I start a seperate thread for Vancouver McThrowdown? 2. How big are you exactly, Anthony? You look big in your avatar. I've never rolled with anyone much larger than myself... :p

CSM,
1. Yep, I'd go for another thread, start it up!
2. I am 6 foot tall, 230lbs. Be happy it's not a year ago, I was at 270lbs back wihen I started. :)
Let's get alot of Bullshidoka's involved! I already train with some people here, would be great to train with more. :)

J-kid,
Let's face facts. I'm old, slow, and have less training than you.
You would win. Hands down.
It saves us the trouble of me losing teeth and all. :)

I have a very minimal amount of grappling and throwing training that I picked up during instructor exchanges with some Gracie JJ people. You can grapple with me if nobody else shows up for that. As long as we get to do some striking aftwerward so I can feel better about getting my ass submitted a lot. . .

If you show up, J-kid, I want to roll to see what I can and can't do to a grappler... I promise no DOUBLE LEG TAKEDOWNs... :D
Seriously, though... Having only gone against a "grappler" (he was a wrestler, trained by those famous guys at Iowa State whose names escape me right now - *edit - I remembered! They Gables from Iowa State) once, and then only in a fairly friendly way (no money was involved), I haven't really done much work dealing with a groundfighting specialist.
I'll say this for the J-kid... He is a pretty respectable kid and his technique isn't too shabby from what I'm told by those who rolled with him last time around. However, he has never felt the thunderous power of my DOUBLE LEG TAKEDOWN (which is a personal joke between J-kid, the attendees of the previous Throwdown, and me). But don't let his niceness get out... It'll ruin his reputation as a dick. :D
Just a week to go... Still waiting for folks to confirm their attendance.
Fragbot, tell your wife to come along... I'm hoping to convince you barbarians to have a meal after the fact, and she'd at least appreciate you taking her out do dinner, wouldn't she?

Throwdown Update -
We are on for the facility.
The following people are expected to show (though you never know about last minute runs to the ER):
Yuna
Gajus
Fragbot
Chufeng (and 2 of his students)
J-kid
Fernando
Me (and my Judo friend)
Possible last minute additions are:
Shironinja
JKDChick
Rising Phoenix
Dibble (has anyone heard from her at all?)
Speed Bump
Sun Tzu
Did I miss anybody? That's a total of 10 relatively confirmed, with another 6 possible attendees, not counting the host school's students (if any choose to attend - I'm going to go down next Friday night (they only have class at that location on Monday and Friday nights) and talk to the instructor to see if anyone is going to show up).
Sounds like fun. Any ideas on dinner/supper afterward? Chinese? American? Indian? Greek? Pizza?
GajusCaesar
2/15/2004 8:23pm,
Greek or Indian is my vote. Unless there is good cheap Chinese.
GajusCaesar
2/15/2004 8:24pm,
Oh, wait. I don't get to vote. I have to leave at 2:00pm. Nevermind.
Matt Stone
2/15/2004 8:26pm,
Why do you have to leave early again?

Do you mean the Brands brothers from Iowa? There's only one Dan Gable, but both Brands (Tom and Terry) were at Iowa with him.

Sorry if I misunderstand... I definitely remember my friend talking about Dan Gable, but I seem to remember him talking about their having been three brothers in the family... It's been a few years (1995), so I don't recall all of the conversation all that well (to the point of constantly forgetting the name Gable!).
It boils down to this. My buddy was a HS wrestler, and somehow he had some connection to someone at Iowa State that allowed him to interact with the Gable(s). They taught him and trained him (not sure to what extent) enough that he was able to turn into something of a winner. Not sure what he won, nor at what level, but he proclaimed himself as having won quite a bit. I have no reason to doubt the guy's credibility, but I'll leave the story at that.
Bottom line, that was the last time I ever really had occasion to "go to the ground" with anyone, and I did it then only because hitting him wasn't an option at all... It was a friendly bout between the "champion" of two different units (me and him), and we were reluctant to engage each other in the first place (we just didn't care about the whole thing, but being bored out of our minds while in the field, we agreed for no other reason than to alleviate our own personal boredom with some training).
