Hi,
I have a few questions regarding fa-jing (power generation in mandarin I believe ?!?).
Don't know if it should go on strikistan or Chinese martial arts so it goes here and here it goes:
Is there a style to which fa-jing is particular or all chinese styles explore it ?
If there is a style that focuses on it more which one is it ?
Why don't we see anyone in the MMA, NHB and the likes using it to knockdown someone ? Does it work at all ?
From my rather limited experience it does hurt like hell...
Thank you !
So Shinkaze, you decided to go ahead and register huh? Cool. Don't forget to review your dojo (http://www.bullshido.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=83).

I would think CMA forum would be a better spot for it. At least there you're guaranteed the audience knows exactly what you are asking.

I recommend doing some searches in the CMA forum. Fa jing, fajing, fa jin, fajin, try a couple different variations. I know It Is Fake has posted some good vids on the topic, with the particular focus on non-chi-mysticality. Basically, it's power generation, so yes, you ARE seeing it in MMA. I think but am not sure that fa jing refers specifically to short power generation, ie, shovel hooks and quick, tight head KO hooks qualify. But I am barely proficient in the terminology, let alone the topic.

It's not magic, dude. You see short power punches and other strikes all the time in MMA.

Yes. I see it standing, but when the guys are on the ground hitting they only seem to use the arm muscles when they possibly could use more to get a KO right there. But again, I would need to ask someone who actually can do this stuff to see if it would be practical in that situation.
Oh, I do believe it's magic. It takes exquisite body control, relaxation and timing to deliver such blows. That for me that is magic !

It is still something that is in other arts.
Here is a post I made with the basics:

++. The kinds of strikes you have in mind don't work on the ground. However, the explosive movements you see grapplers using to reverse and escape positions are mechanically very similar to fa jin.

Thank you ! That's what I was looking for. I really don't know what I'm talking about here but I heard someone comment on that and I was wondering what was the view. So, none of that "whip your spine" to pound on something works when someone is not standing ?

Well you whip your spine with your hips and the rest of your lower body. if you're on the ground, you cannot generate all that much power that will finally be manifest in the punch.
Try it at home. Forget the "short" part, just go for jin. Stand up, turn around like your whole body is a tightening spring, then push off from your ankles on up and finally swing out a song arm.
Not bad, eh?
Now lie down on the ground and try the same exact thing.
Good luck with that.

Got it !!
What about when you are on your knees ? Are there any extra power we can borrow from other muscles except the arms ?

There's really no way to hit as hard on the ground as you can when standing. Once in awhile you'll see a guy rise up and throw himself down onto the other fellow fist first, which is probably the hardest you can punch from your knees. The hardest I've been able to hit on the ground is with knees (i.e. still all muscle, but using bigger muscles).
