Yeah, I totally agree with you all... That is pretty nuts the way the media did that story. When I first heard about it I was all like "Wow! Tell me more!" and was then disappointed. Even though he can be whatever gender he damn well pleases, if you wanted to get really pedantic about it you could say he is still genetically a female regardless of the sex change since he has an XX karyotype and lacks the SRY region in his genome.
(In mammals and some other organisms the default gender is female and the SRY region, required to make males male, is normally located on the Y chromosome, but in the literature there are reports of XX males and XY females due to the region either being translocated or not functioning properly. If I remember correctly, many of them were reported to have reduced or no fertility, much like others with aneuploidy of the sex chromosomes, i.e. XXY males, XO females, etc.)
