I am learning through all the recent activity here that a lot of members here used to practice the chun.

I am very curious what the chun demographic is here as far as what lineage the posters here came from.

I do not care at all what lineage you think is best, whether you think chun sucks or is awesome, I don't care what techniques you think is best, how leet you are or thought you were for practicing the chun, just where you came from. . . maybe also what got you to join and perhaps more interestingly, what was the last straw before you left.

So to recap, tell what lineage you came from and keep it on topic.

...So to recap, tell what lineage you came from and keep it on topic. Something is telling me most folks with wing chun past simply don't care to elaborate on this...

Besides, most of them revealed their past in one of the 18 563 threads on wing chun that we have here already.

But just so you are not sad - I studied Leung Ting Wing Tsun.

Yip Man - Leung Ting - Norbert Maday - Denes Szabo

Abruptedly quit when graduating from the Uni in Hungary and returning to Slovakia.

Bullshido made me want to try and test my cobwebbed tsun against resisting opponents again.

And I even might get back into serious MA training shortly.

The lineage of my WC is as follows: Ip Man - Chris Chan - Mark Barquera - Myself.

I really enjoy the art, in all honesty. It brings something exotic and even, in my case, relaxing to the other styles I still work on (Boxing, mostly, and a bit of Submission Wrestling that needs work). The last straw is something I posted about in a thread here that got moved to YMAS, which was when I was told by the instructor that he would not allow me to train in other arts and if I tried there would be problems with him and myself in class. He basically meant he'd kick my ass and not let me come back if I trained in anything else. I'm currently looking for a new Chun school, actually. I might end up going for quite a drive to find one, though.

If I remember correctly, my lineage was:

Yip Man > Yip Chung > Kwok Cheung > David Brown

My linage was Ip Man, Wm Cheung, Keith Mazda, Brian Ayers. Sorry about the spellng with the names probably not right.

I tried it for about 6 months but it just wasn't a good fit for me. The problem began when I found Bullshido and began to question what I was being taught. In my mind it came up short. So now I do BJJ, which I really enjoy.

Edit, ok, I bothered to look it up. Its Keith Mazza. I was surprised I got Brian's last name right. It was a few years ago.:viking:

YIp Man - Chris Chan - My Cousin - Myself.

Also, a little bit of Augustine Fong--Brian Tufts--myself.

Chun looks cool. If you say it doesn't you are a liar:
YouTube - The Prodigal Son; Lam Ching Ying vs. Frankie Chan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twUl2iCdhAA)
YouTube - The Prodigal Son; Training sequence (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5eSdkeX8HE)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qJvv3QsT9Y

Then as you train with better resistance you start realizing that your school ain't so good. Then when you change school and spar other chunners you realize it is good you left.

Hey, it was early in the morning, I didn't have any coffee yet and didn't feel like spending the time to look it up. Also it was like 3 years ago and at my age I'm surprised I even remember taking the chun.

Leung Jan>Leung Bik>Yip Man>Leung Ting>Me

or

Leung Jan>Leung Bik>Yip Man>Leung Ting>Emin Boztepe>Me

to be more accurate, I only trained with Dr. Ting several days.

I have also had lessons from several other Sifus like Micheal Casey and others you would not have heard of who don't want their name in the netz.

edit: I guess I should have put Kernspecht in there too, as he was Boztepe's teacher but Emin was getting his own privates from Ting when I started.

I always wonder how much The Chun's rep was assisted by the fact that one of the best kung fu flicks of all time features it

My master based much of his teaching on that unlike most wushu (or other choreographed MA's), wing chun is not about fancy moves, but effectiveness.

Before you start LOLing about mentioning "wing chun" and "effectiveness" in one sentence - effectivity instead of theatrical set of movements is the basic premise in the creation of wing chun IMO, regardless of what became of it later.

I believe the chun is probably the least appealing to the eye from all Chinese martial arts (no acrobatic jumps, spinning high kicks, whatnot).

You know this isn't what he wanted right?

All is a strong implication. I can give you about 7-8 that are what you'd call ugly. MAny of which don't have high kicks.

Sorry to derail, but Prodigal Son is awesome. More importantly, who's in your avatar this time, Asriel?
