...A politician got off a plane in London waving a piece of paper that said "There won't be war with Germany."

But seriously folks:

<param name="movie" value="YouTube - One Inch Punch Documentary (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kx9iPFMriz0) name="allowFullScreen" value="true">

I didn't come up with anything on a search, but I can't believe this has never been posted.

I would like to know 1) Who these douchebags are in this documentary, 2) whether anyone else who has done or does Kung Fu of any kind has been taught a "one inch punch". I will broaden that queer-y (intentionally misspelled) to ninjers, since this seems like the kind of crap they might buy into.

Well, they^suck, that's for sure.

However, the old man showed us one-inch punches, but not because it was a "punch" but to get us to learn how to generate force/power from our hips and dropping into it.

The applicability is either: knife-fighting where you don't want to chamber back and risk the opponent defending; or in the case of a competetion where you can keep a jacket-grip and punch your opponent as part of your entry.

The second one is a bit on the "dirty" side of sportsmanship so be sure that the throw that follows works and has enough impact that they forget about the 1" intro to it ;)

Also, we studied the punch because it really helps you develop a sense of punching from your hips, as opposed to armpunching.

Yes, but I'm assuming you expect no failed vital organs or broken ribs to result from it.

nah, just displaced vertebrae and an inability to produce viable semen for 4 years afterward.

Did anyone else notice that Zee Lo talks just like Bruce Lee?

I've received one-inch strikes over the years, most memorably when I was a teenager training with an old kung fu sifu. He actually used the line "to hear is to disbelieve, to see is to be deceived and to feel is to understand" before smacking me with a one-inch palm strike that knocked me maybe five stumbling steps steps backwards and left a palm-shaped bruise on my chest. Then he smiled and asked, "do you understand?" Cool old guy with a great sense of showmanship.

I thought the mini-documentary was actually pretty good, although it would be easier to take it seriously without the chi references and movie/video game clips. There's nothing mystical about one-inch strikes, they just require some practice and good body mechanics.

Dr. Zee Lo list Dan Inosanto as one of his instructors but there is no mention of Dr. Lo being under Guru Inosanto's list of instructors.

As far as tthe Will Y. character. His school has a linage like, looks legit but I have been wrong before.

They also are totally useless in a fight, since very rarely will an opponent let your hand sit there an inch from his/her body before receiving a chi blow (that's what she said).

What who said?

Anyway, I agree that they'd be hella hard to pull off in a fight.

Wow, high-school level humor passes right through this man. I know this man named Xavier who'd be interested in your...special talents.

And a basic understanding of kinetic linking will impress people who don't know any better (totally guilty of showing off).

Oh, that "she" ... yeah, showing my age, I guess.

Ideally, you would use an explosive punch generated from your hips, but you basically shift your body and straighten a slightly bent arm. This way you hit the guy, but also push him away. Use hips, shift, punch 'through' the person, and add a dash of chi.

It's supposed to look cool, but serves no purpose in the real world.

What's funny about this is if I put my hand on someone's chest, had them stand still, and then shoved them backward a few feet, nobody would say boo about any of it. But suddenly if I make my hand into a fist and then give it a 1 inch start, I'm a chi wielding ninjer kung fu devil.

Tensing all the right muscles at the same time + body weight focused through the knuckles does make a difference if you're the one getting hit. The impact hurts as well as knocking you backwards; I wouldn't want to get hit with a one-inch strike to the jaw any more than a more orthodox punch. Actually, the last time I was injured in MA training (about 3 months ago) was a cracked rib from a short punch.

Still, you're right about the audience appeal; at that level, in demos etc., it basically is a closed-fist shove to the chest. Of course, the "victim" is normally set up by standing square-on to the puncher, which means they're out of alignment to resist or absorb a straight shot anyway.

I learned the one inch punch during my years in wing chun. There was never any chi gathering nonsense. Basically I was taught to relax the whole body in a forward stance with the front hand cocked so that the fist is vertical on the centerline. Then exploding first with the hips, which would turn the shoulder, then extend the arm, and cocking the fist so that the bottom three knuckles come up into the target.

My instructor taught me that it was just an exercise in relaxation and explosive hip movement to generate power. He told me if you watch most demonstrations where some douche tries to pass this off as some chi power super saiyan strike, the guy receiving the punch is almost always standing completely erect with no base, thus the reason why they go flying.

Notice for 1'' punch, the atackee is always standing with feet parallel, so that any kind of blow will knock him back. A chair directly behind him is even better, it assures he fall over chair and looks dramatic....
