Couldn't we just give them a new white belt every six months? "Look how shiny and new it is! You EARNED it, Johnny!"

You're in eastern PA? When do we set up the TD?
Let me go train at Grant's or wherever else and then we shall talk.

Sooooo... you guys FINALLY went with one of my ideas :laughing1 Well, to be sure, it was worded "Kiddie Krotty Sucks", but close enough.
And in response to the "What's wrong with giving kids black belts" poster... The problem is is that most of those aren't awarded because the kid shows that they can fight. They're awarded because their parents keep paying. And with McDojos, it misleads these kids into believing that they can actually fight... until they find out the hard way that that isn't the case (i.e. getting pwned). Kiddie Black Belts are just one of many forms of Bullshido that this site speaks out against.
Don't get me wrong - I'm all for kids learning martial arts. But they should be being taught how to fight. In a lot of cases, that's why a lot of parents (not all, necessarily) enroll their kids in martial arts. So they can defend themselves against bullies. But too often, they end up getting suckered in by Bullshidokas and McDojos, that take their money but don't deliver on their promises.
And THAT'S what's wrong with Kiddie Black Belts.
But if they don't get their black belts how will they know they're all special unique snowflakes? They're not. Children should be reminded daily that they are not special until they manage to prove otherwise. If you do not allow a child to fail he will grow weak. This is why so many adults are such whiny, pathetic creatures.

You people have no heart.
Of course there's a place for kiddie-BBs.
Rugby. They may not last as long as the regular ball, but mass-manufacturing has made them both cheaper and easier to procure.

I agree with Phrost, nothing wrong with this at all.
Excuse me for the late response. I'm not saying there's anything wrong. Just pointing out the fact.:hippy2:

"You are not a beautiful and unique snowflake! You are not your fucking khakis!"
I hate the whole belt system period. how good you are, and how ready you are to move on in your training should be mesured by your skills and preperation, not not what peice of cloth is holding your outfit togather. But if we have to have belts could we at least have some standeresation, so that everyone with a blackbelt has at least simular requirements?
The French grasp the deeper meaning of civilised behaviour as soon as they can speak, and drill it into them."
if zhe french are being brought up so 'tough' then why is the average french man sucha *****?
No, see? They were civilized, not brought up tough. It's like the exact opposite thing.

Screw that, I'm new too and I just found a relatively close judo club and a MMA club. I can see if they'll let us use the place.
You guys are just jealous!

whats awesome is that where I train jiu jitsu, the kids that become black belts in their kids jiu jitsu class, upon turning 16 and joining the adults are only allowed to wear purple belts.

Reminds me of eagle scouts from an "eagle factory," went on a trip with some, around the back side of the mountain, and when we came out above the lake, they couldn't even orient themselves with a map and compass, even had the "orienting" merit badge! LOL How about those 18 year old sandans? Of course, I watched a young japanese style almost win a tournament "The Battle of Rexburg" (podunk Idaho), but that kempo instructor, threw a simultaneous kick with one foot, a reverse punch with one hand, and a ridge-hand with the other hand, all while standing on one leg. Of course, he "scored" and took the "heavy-weight championship!" ROFLMAO, damn kid had been smoking him!

That's generous, at our gym, they are whites.

In general I agree with the sentiments of this thread. Children should not really be balck belts for all the reasons already hashed out here.
I do however believe that organised and disciplined training is VERY valauble for children, and I guess that is the tradeoff.
The problem is when the instructors/schools make claims of teaching self defence/fighting
The poor kids are being ripped off as well, not getting honest training, and of course this may ruin their future training career?
I work with the consequences of disolusioned, drug addicted, depressed, violent and confused youths all the time.
At the risk of being hammered down, I wonder if apart from conscription into the military, the next best thing might be traditional martial arts with an emphasis on discipline and respect?

Why so serious? Is all good as long as the kids are having fun and being taught discipline and Asian culture, right? Life is a kick, so kick it!

Actually, I think your right, this is a stupid thread. Does anyone really worry if kids have black belts or not? Its not as if they are being sent out to do security work or being sent to war!!
Let them have their fantasies. Reality sucks and is for grown ups.
