Daanish you evaded the question. You said that the koran is deliberately obscure so as to encourage muslims to study, yet a literal reading of it encourages violence and inhumanity. Has all the violence in the world caused by Muslims been worth it to encourage you to study?

If I said it is deliberately obscure, I apologise, that is not what I meant to say, or what I was intending to say.
The Quran is not obscure, from the minute it was compiled there have been books written about how to follow the Quran. Literally thousands. However given that most of the Muslim world is in poverty and is uneducated in the ways of understanding the Quran, it leads to violence and whatever else you may want to point out. This is the fault of the muslims themseleves as they have allowed it to come to this, which is why I make it a point to clarify my position with whomever I meet. Fortunately, I see a rising trend amongst young educatd muslims who want to better understand and spread the proper word of islam.
The Quran is meant to be an entire way of life, it is not simply a matter of just skimming through it and following what is said at face value. That is why there are so many commentaries and discussions about the Quran, these have been written to form an entire foundation on which a muslim society can be established and run. However due to infighting and what not, there are now a dozen branches of islamic law, God knows how many sects and so on.

Daanish the evidence does not indicate that the economically disenfranchised are the more extremist. The evidence seems to indicate the very opposite. Saudi Arabia is a very wealthy country (due to oil) with free state-subsidized education and good heath care. If what you say is true, we would expect to see LESS extremism here. There's poor people in Tibet that suffer under brutal occupation. Why aren't they strapping dynamite to themselves and boarding school busses?

but I think many of the bad things people do require religion.
Virus this is where I disagree with you, while I am certainly tired of my fellow Theists doing stupid **** I don't think religion is to blame one way or the other. In my mind blaming religion is like blaming a rock because somebody threw it at you. It takes responsibility out of the hands of those who actually do ****. True enough religious fanaticism does require religion as part of the ideological core behind it's actions. But I think it's fanaticism plain and simple that fucks things up. Whether it politcal or religious it's taking things to an unhealthy extreme that turns something otherwise benign into an ideological WMD.

Scientific studies also find that bathing every day and washing underneath the foreskin is just as clean as someone who is circumcised. Good hygiene practices won't make a difference between the 2.

Tyrsman if the koran said "it's good to draw cartoons about Mohamed." do you think their would have been riots and murders over cartoons?
If the koran said "Allah likes criticism of Islam. Blessed are the critics." would Theo Van Gogh have been stabbed and shot in his driveway?
If the bible said "souls? don't be silly, there's no magic ghosts floating around inside you." would there have been bombings of abortion clinics and the assassination of doctors?
If the bible said "Leave the baby's whanger alone. If it turns out that being circumcised is more hygienic or protects against AIDS then LET THE FUCKING KID DECIDE FOR HIMSELF WHEN HE BECOMES AN ADULT!" do you think Jews would practice genital mutilation?
Fanaticism isn't the problem. it's being fanatical about religions that have brutality and bigotry at their core. If fanaticism is itself to blame then why aren't the most fanatical Jainists flogging homosexuals and hijacking planes? Becuase the core tenet of Jainism is never harm a living thing under any circumstances. The moderate Jains are people who go about their daily business, don't eat meat and prefer to put a spider outside than spray it with bug-spray. The hard Jainists that become monks sweep the floor in front of them before they walk to avoid stepping on insects and they run hospitals for injured animals. The more fanatical you go down the Jainism path, the less violent you get.
So it isn't fanaticism. If it was then we would find equal numbers of Jainist suicide bombers, Buddhist terrorists and New Thought Universalists declaring Fatwahs against people who criticize them.

Virus, I've said this before...Saudi Arabia is run by a ROYAL FAMILY, and the official name of the country is THE KINGDOM OG SAUDI ARABIA. These are two concepts which are OUTRIGHT WRONG... there is no concept of a ROYAL FAMILY in Islam nor is there a cocncept of a KINGDOM on earth. If they knew so much about Islam, they would noty display such outright hypocrisy. PLEASE DO NOT MAKE SAUDI ARABIA THE STANDARD BY WHICH YOU JUDGE MUSLIMS! They rely on ill conceived Sharia which are not applicable anymore.
Why dont buddhist monks strap explosives to themselves? Because there is no basis whatsoever in Buddhism to retaliate... regardless of the situation. This will eventually lead to a situation where the Buddhists will be completely taken over and they will not have raised a finger. Islam allows you to retaliate under extreme conditions. The problem is the poor and uneducated are being misled to think that they are being oppressed by 'the west' when it is their own people (who are in power) who are oppressing them.

The Quran also doesnt say riot and kill should someone draw pictures of Muhammad.
'If the koran said "Allah likes criticism of Islam. Blessed are the critics." would Theo Van Gogh have been stabbed and shot in his driveway? '
Allah says to leave those who doubt Islam to their own ways. No where does it say kill does who criticise Islam... show me a verse where it does. This was once again an unfortunate act of extremism.
I cant comment on the bible quotes because I dont know much about the bible.
'it's being fanatical about religions that have brutality and bigotry at their core. '
Islam doesnt have brutality and bigotry at its core... that is what your shown on the tv and in the newspapers, your never shown the millions and millions of moderate muslims who are a boon to their society.
As for comparing religions... I dont want to get into that. but once again the misunderstanding comes in because Islam has given provision to react if you are under extreme oppression. This is a concept which is easily twisted to suit the needs of those in power.
All the homosexual killing and what not is based on hadith and outdated Sharia. Of the thousands of hadith that are available, around 30% have somewhat of a claim to legitimacy. You are not allowed to kill another human being unless its in self defense, he atacks your family etc.
The concept of whipping adulterers and all may seem brutal to you... but the solution is simple.... don cheat while your married... why does this seem so wrong to you?? Its very simple... you cant get along with your wife... get a divorce you have every right to do so. Suddenly it is ok to cheat on a person you have made a commitment to for you whole life?? These rules are intended to prevent such things from happening. Fornication? So you would rather have thousands of teen pregnancies as opposed to sex within marriage between two adults who share a bond of love and responsibilty? Thousands of children being abandoned by mothers who got pregnant outside of marriage??? You blame islam for taking measures against such immoral acts... but you seem fine with the acts themselves????

It's wrong because the punishment is worse than the crime. Just look at how ridiculous what you said is. Hey if you're against cutting off people's balls for shoplifting then just don't shoplift duh!

My girlfriend had a friend in highschool who's parents believed that dinosaur bones were created and planted by scientists to throw us off.
Greeks were digging up prehistoric bones before the alledged birth of Christ & studied them, so yeah that theory makes sense.

We don't need the real world, we have math!
We are the Yellow Bamboo of science except ours work!!!!
bwahahahaha!
This is what gets me, why do you say math when math is singular? surely you're doing more that one equation shouldn't it be maths or mathematics being the plural.

We don't need no stinking grammar, we have math!
