There are two things wrong with this. The first is the fact that they handed over a PASSPORT as age verification. I wonder how many 16 year olds over in China can afford passports. The other issue is the Chinese coach's response, Ad Hominem is not a defense to anything. Yes, someone wanted to make sure that your gymnast's were of legal age...so your response is to come out and say that people are questioning you because you're better than everyone else? Outstanding. The US Track runners weren't disqualified because they were better than anybody...it was because they stepped on the inside line during the 200m.

The paperwork China submitted to the IOC included birth certificates, ID cards and previous and current passports.

Which does nothing to assuage the concerns over forgery, unless those "previous" passports are significantly old.

Only in the last few years has age even become an issue, in previous years if you were good enough you got to go, if not, you stayed home. They are just trying to protect the children that get over stressed training for these events. In China that is a moot point, as they take the children when they are 3 and start training them then, and constantly onward from then untill they are competition worthy. Not nice, rather fucked up actually, but the age protection is not working anyway so why whine?

Yes, of course it is. Your parents love you and want the best for you. Some parents are worse than others, but the bottom line is that biology dictates that parents love their kids. The state on the other hand is an entity incapable of an emotion like love, so a child is deprived of the love and care necessary to grow up a functional, mentally healthy person. You could see that Nastia and her father had a healthy relationship.

Social isolation and a lack of normal human relationships make for emotionally unstable people. Whether right wing evangelical parents that homeschool their children, refuse to allow them to watch tv, read most books, or do much more than read their bible, or a communist state that cares only about producing a tool to preform a task. In any event, their tasks are over, and at most the gorls only have 8 more years of functional competition in them. Gymnasts don't last forever.
