Thought this crowd would like the Marine work; if you read into it a bit it's all designed to be real; fast hits, grappling/MMA stuff, improvised weapons.
Can't find the link for this description but in one article there's a sparring drill described. One Marine is in the ring and the rest are doing reps of something. The guy in the ring has the job to fight hard enough that the instructor doesn't get a break. If the instructor gets a break he assigns more reps as penalty to the guys outside the ring; the guy inside the ring cannot leave until the guys doing reps finish.
I do think the Army's TKD thing has to do with making nice with S.Korea. Oh well, better something than nothing though, and I don't think we'll be seeing Saving Private Ryan With Flying Crescent Kick in the field, don't worry.

Wait, i thought they were already trained in TKD. Now it's becoming a rule?
Whould be cool to see a marine leeping through the air in a semi-flip kicking someone in the face and then just, falling down in a big heep of equipment.
The combination of judo, boxing and lowkicks is about as close to the sort of shooto i trained. The instructor told me it was a blend of Sambo, judo and muai thai. so im hanging on to the shooto with dirty tricks.

It might only be me, but I quite fancy the idea that the US military MA training sucks, then I might be able to kick their asses. Too bad about all those damn guns... When I shoot it's quite different from their kind of shooting if you get my point... cheaters.

I think the Military men in South Korea should learn Korean martial arts because its there and easy accessible. Its better then no martial arts at all. Taekwondo sport sucks, but if the military can learn TRUE TKD and not olympic crap then it would be beneficial. They should also learn hapkido. Infac why not cross train them in both? It would be smart for the military to learn the Korean arts because it would help them understand Korean culture and the country they are serving in and would create a better relationship with the military and koreans in general.
But make sure the army uses combat effective TKD and not olympic BS.

Spoken like a veteran... not!
Soldiers are trained for contingencies. That is the nature of both combat and combat trainng. To quote Murphy, "no plan survives first contact with the enemy." You prepare a soldier best by exposing them to as many different tasks, pieces of equipment, situations, etc., as possible. HTH is simply one situation needed to be familiarized with. The problem being that some of the ways that are found to deal with that particular contingency are less than fully effective and have more to do with padding some colonel's evaluation than it does with preparing a soldier's "tool box."
And look at that... No profanity. Whaddya know?

I find this to be unoffensively naive. Here are the salient issues:
1. How much money is this going to earn the Kukkiwon?
2. There is no way the 8th army is doing TKD without going through the Kukkiwon, which means Olympic TKD.
3. Why force soldiers to waste time on a martial art of doubtful efficacy for such bizarre goals? I have personal experience of this. The soldiers will not do it.
4. Why do civilians always think adding another requirement for training or something is feasible? Where do you think it comes from? How many hours are there in a soldier's day? I'd much rather that soldier gets a good morning 10 mile ruck in than practice his Poomsay.
5. If you want to improve relations, find a reasonable compromise on SOFA.

More than I care to have spent. Training budgets are already strained, why waste more cash on useless things?

Amen.

They'll go to training because they have to, but they certainly will show little real motivation to do something they know is garbage. The minimum effective range of a soldier's inbuilt BS detector is 0 meters, and this is going to set it off with a vengeance...
The current combatives manual isn't really all that bad. If the Army simply focused on developing trainers to convey the info in the manual rather than finding interesting new bullets for OERs the efficiency of training would increase immensely...
Just my 2 won.

Just wait until we start doing forms instead of PT, and meditate instead of shooting a target.
