Uijeonbu station?! You my homeboy!!11!!

I was at Essayons for 18 months.

You're spot on about the black belt thing. The other problem is that most Koreans got them in their early teens and will wear them for the rest of their lives.

I worked with some Teuk-Gong guys...Laid back and fucking cool, but I think most of the reason they could fight is that they were all like ex-gangsters from Taegu and Pusan...

"Oriental Way"

That's weird man. There's no "Orient" to an Oriental. A good Korean friend of mine told me that the weirdest experience he had in the US was walking around one day and realizing that he had become an "Asian".

So.. USA gonna start losing some wars due to useless close combat techniques. I can se it right nog, US soldiers trying out jumping spinkicks in a jungle with 30 kg of equipment on them. Go go marine. ^^

I agree. I found that quite weird..but there I was being told by a Korean major that I was not following the "oriental way" I have to say that that further added to my discontent with TKD, along with my own musing about its effectiveness.

I don't believe many would be that foolish to try spinning kicks with bullets raining over their heads.

It'd be hard enough to use BJJ in all their kit, let alone fucking TKD !

Whoever's in charge of these decisions needs to stop wasting the soldier's time.

Re: Ex-gangsters from Daegu and Busan...

I hear you. I have started to wonder if the sign of a good MA-for-self-defense school in Korea is that there are thugs training there.

I think the riot police get some decent training, particularly in the area of mental toughness and resistance to tedium. Of course, they go into action in full body armour with shields and helmets and 3ft clubs. Despite all the demos they put on with HKD-style takedowns and locks, it seems like the core of their duty is to batter protesters unconscious with clubs.

I think the israeli mossad train the best military-oriented MA, at least from what i have gathered about krav maga. Given that the knowledge i have about it isnt much but it seems alright for military use. Correct or bullcrap?

this move seems so highly political also. i mean, the goal of the WTF is to make their TKD the most popular sport in the world, and they do their damnest to make WTF the only "real" tkd. with wtf tkd in the olympics, they had to move on, and this just seems like another step in their plan.

...i know, i know, sounds like a conspiracy theory :), WTF wants to take over the world.

but really, this is just like what any private company would do to increase its market.

What about Sambo? Anyone here train that, what do they think? Krav Maga? Someone mentioned it before, surely the army must have looked at them too.
What's wrong with Combatives, basic strikes and kicks, judo throws, lots of sparring????

The Chinese army does LienBoChuan-that's just the name of the form, it isn't really a style-does anyone have any info on Chinese military H2H?

Doesn't the Taiwanese army also do TKD? They surely can't teach their soldiers the same McDojo crap as in the schools. I don't believe they are that stupid.

Just out of curiosity: what is the guy in red doing?

I hate getting one in the goodies as much as the next guy, but damn....

I whould have to agree with osiris. But i have another. How about dont make war. *turning into a cute cherub singing songs and playing the harp*

But yeah, shooto or krav maga whould, to me, seem like an obvious choise for the military, with a bit "dirty" techniques involved.

Judo is perfect for the Army's H2H program because most soldiers wear heavy jackets that are very much like a Gi, so throws based on the Gi are very effective. In addition, you do not necessarily want to go directly to the ground with a lot of gear on, but throwing your opponent and then stomping/soccer kicking them is the best option.

Here's the Army Combatives manual, online:

I agree with that. It's not fun being being on the ground with 70lbs in your rucksack and a SAW still strapped to you. Best for you to put the other man on the ground and Know enough about the ground to get back up if you end up there and then stomp/stab/gut the crap out of the guy. Judo, boxing, and teach some low to mid level kicks and the grunts should be just fine. Of course, best training of all is being superb with that rifle. A good shooter is a sight to see.
