I am very skeptical of this. To the best of my knowledge, you can obtain the name of their ISP and the location of their local office from the ARIN records via a referral WHOIS. It's worth noting that "local" is relative - for my IP, the office is 250km or so away. If you know how to do better (based only on my IP - my username and e-mail address tells you everything you need to know anyways), I'll... I dunno, do something nice for you in exchange for information about your technique.

I would like to add my 2 cents using the limited amount of knowledge I have on this-

Just off an ip, Russ is correct, unless they are actively trying to mask their address, in which case, you're SOL in trying to find them without having a fairly high level of skill in the subject.

Now, once you have the ip, you can try to find a person with lots and lots of tedious work-

-Person has a username that he uses in multiple different places on the web -> use to eventually find email addy for further crosschecking.

-Person has made their email viewable/Someone gets the list of registered email addresses through less than ethical ways. Crosscheck (social networking sites are pretty good for this) to potentially find address.

-Their ISP is one that sells user info, in which case, you can probably find where the person is down to zip code

-If ip is coming from a large office, you get a IT guy that works for them to check the web traffic (specify he's posting on BS.net) and check for activity to pinpoint the comp, or, once again, through less than than ethical means, find the same info yourself.

It's not impossible, but it's not exactly easy. Unless the person in question is an e-idiot and posts his private info out on the web for all to see.

On top of that, if you assume that the subject is being truthful about their LEO credentials, with:
-some combination of the information gleaned above (and writing samples/hints), and
-contacts in law enforcement organizations in the rough geographic information provided by whois,
you may be able to check with said contacts. Double points if the subject uses a computer belonging to the given law enforcement agency to access Bullshido.

Actually, I've been learning some very interesting things about proxies, and so called IP maskers. They really aren't as secure as the average joe thinks.

It depends on how hard they want to stay hidden.

his name, location, wouldn't be that that hard. Hell, it is actually kind of easy once you learn how.

Edit* I agree with both what you and Russ said. My initial post sounds like I'm saying it is super easy through IP trace. That wasn't my intent.

Jesus, man- work on your quoting blocks, I was confused for a second. -_-;;

And no, (most) IP maskers really aren't that secure from a technical stand point, but they usually are more than anyone without a serious interest in the subject bothers to try and figure out.

Did you get the PMs he sent me? Did you personally call phone numbers to back up said PMs?

Quit being stupid, people.

I brought up the whole IP/email counter argument in order to encourage foxguitar to provide proof, that is all.

If you want to talk about internet security, take it to Sociocide (http://www.sociocide.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=73).

In response to OP:

I was attacked by a bear. He sliced the ever loving **** out of my arm. The ever loving mother fucking **** was sliced out of my arm. Hell, everyone at the detroit throwdown will probably see the mince-meat of my upper left arm, anyway.

Point of the story: I flying arm barred him. He muscled out and i had to rear naked choke the poor thing. He woke up, we had a cup of tea, and he apologized and gave me a lift to the hospital.

errr....i may have exaggerated parts of that story...

Not today with all these video cameras , yikes you will wind up in Federal Court like quick these days.

This may surprise alot of you , in todays day in age using physical force is the last resort , when I first came on you could literally use some asshole for kata practice LOL within reason of course . Now unless you really have to , it simply isnt worth it , So you could be filmed and even if you're right , you face scrutiny .

Ask any of the soldiers who went into combat , what they think of the assinine rules of engagement and they will tell you it sucks. Im not comparing a soldier in a hot LZ to a civilian LEO but its just to demonstate a point.

But sometimes a person gives you no choice . And for the record most cops today are opting for BJJ more than striking arts for the simple reason . Its easier than trying to explain why you side kicked some dude .
