It takes nothing special for good men to do good or evil men to do evil.
It takes religion for good men to do evil.
You should put that inside a fortune cookie made of bullshit.
I kind of agree mike but I dislike the term "evil" because it implies consciously seeking out actions that are wrong. I think almost everybody tries to do what they think is best, it's just that some people are horribly misguided or deluded in their conception of "best". Religion is a major source of that delusion.

If your religion is one that has you do evil then you are not a good person. That's strait up bullshit. You're also discounting all the good things people do every day for their religion. What about those people who volunteer their time every night at church soup kitchens to make sure people who can't afford to eat 3 meals a day get at least one decent meal every day? They don't get paid for that.

I'm using evil in a generic form here.
There are some people who are just nasty sick evil fucks. They either don't know right from wrong or don't care. Then there are people following the calling of their god who do sick nasty evil things, for example suicide bombers. They know what they are doing is normally considered wrong but in this case it is for the glory of god, and therefore good.

I volunteered to walk homeless dogs for an animal shelter for the longest time. Religion was not required and in fact if you're just doing good things to buy brownie points with Skydad then it kind of diminishes whatever you're doing.

Does rape, mass murder/cultural genocide, animal cruelty, slavery, beating your children and stoning people to death count as evil?
People can be motivated to do both good and bad things by religion, but in both cases it is irrational.
Furthermore it's not a matter of "totting up" the good vs the bad and seeing who wins, it's seeing if the bad is at a significant level of concern and worth the good. How many suicide bombings is it worth to have a soup kitchen?
Hezbollah has a charitable wing as well, is it worth keeping around because of that?

Religious people do good things in the name of religion. Religious people also do horrible evil things in the name of religion When they chose to surrender their will to a higher power, religion, government, maybe an internet forum, the capability to do wrong in the name of good becomes a whole lot easier. I vas chust following orders!

Yes (as if this wasn't self evident)

Not according to some religious beliefs, and I think that was the point being made.

Since when is beating children wrong? Take a look at California, that should be enough to know beating children s a good thing.
On a side note what animal cruelty was committed for Sky Pops?

When you die, that's it. If you're lucky, you get buried and eventually turned to worm poop.

Well a little beating isn't a big deal but the bible says that you can beat the utter **** out of your children and they wont die from it.
Except for children have died from zealous beatings given by parents who love their bibles more then their kids.
