I Ran across this thesis written by Major S Nash for the Canadian Forces College.

http://wps.cfc.forces.gc.ca/papers/csc/csc29/mds/nash.htm

Here's a quote:

“My experience with UAC in 3 PPCLI is that a hockey player using the left-hand-jersey-grab/right-hand-pile-driver would kick the sh*t out of most martial artists.”
- Col Strogan; 3 PPCLI

It's a bit of a slog (it *is* a thesis written by a staff college commando, after all) but it's pretty good reading. Kind of embarrassing, given my background, but good reading.

I only perused it briefly as am in a net cafe and paying by the minute. But will save it to disk and transfer to my laptop at some point soon for a proper read

Arctos,

I worked with a WO Veary (sp?) in Kingston ON ( 2rcr I believe) a while back and apparently he is some military hand to hand combat SME for the CF. I guess him and some other dudes took a look at what the british SAS, US Seals and delta, Canadian JTF and a few other groups did, looked at what was currently being taught in the CF and rewrote the PAM on and to hand combat. If you're interested in reading about it I can try and track him down via email and ask him to send over the current CF pam on hand to hand or any of the study information theyhave that they can share?

Might be interesting to post it up here and get an opinion on it too.

Did you catch this part Arctos?

The next major development for US SF close quarter training was a special training event called the “Trojan Warrior Project”. Starting in August 1985, a civilian performance enhancement group called Sports Mind was contracted to provide an aikido-based intensive trial programme for two SF A-Teams, 260 and 560. In the final result the project was an unqualified success as participants showed amazing gains from start to end. Average improvements were 96% for physical fitness; 80% for psychological fitness, concentration and toughness; 45% for team cohesion; and, 94% for mission specific tasks/skills.[133] Significantly, all training was conducted by all ranks and one of the SF Captain team commanders commented as follows

Hi Spark:

I did catch that part, made me smile.

If you can get ahold of that pam, I would be very interested, indeed. :)

On that note, I was preparing a post when I saw your reply, so I will paste it below, here:

I was backing up my laptop on portable hard drive before said laptop stops working altogether. After I'm done, I think I will experiment with the aerodynamic properties of Dells.

If anyone is interested, I have pdf copies of:

Underwood Combato
FM 21-150 - masquerading as "krav maga"
B-GL-318-018/PT-001 - CF Close Quarter Combat 1988-1992
Get Tough
Kill or Be Killed
All In Fighting
Fairbairn Knife Fighting - HEAVILY abridged
Marine Martial Arts

These are all pretty big files (especially "All In Fighting") and I would need assistance in getting access to an ftp site for transfer but, past that, anyone who is interested, let me know.

Richard Strozzi Heckler was the chief Aikido instructor for the Trojan Warrior project , and later wrote an excellent memoir - Amazon.com: In Search of the Warrior Spirit: Teaching Awareness Disciplines to the Green Berets: Richard Strozzi-Heckler: Books (http://www.amazon.com/Search-Warrior-Spirit-Awareness-Disciplines/dp/1556434251)

For clarity, while Aikido was a major part of the Trojan Warrior course, they were also heavily trained in various other "awareness disciplines".

I think I recall a guy, Keith? Veary, Veury, something like that.

If it's the same guy, he was one of those PT guys with muscles in his feces. :)

Judas on a raft, he'd be in his late fifties, or sixties now
