So, in my quest to understand how Thompson could be such a can, even with 25 fights, I came across this gem. The opening intro describing the match-up of these two fighters, while meant to be completely serious hype, is one of the funniest things I HAVE EVER SEEN.

Ah ha ha ha ha ha haaaa! *wipes tear from eye*
On a serious note, looking at his Sherdog record, Thompson has beaten some big names such as Yoshida and Frye, and back in '05 had racked up an impressive number of wins. But in his fights since '06 he's gone 3-7. His last two fights before Kimbo were losses, one of which was in Elite XC. They basically threw a washed up, out of shape fighter on losing streak at Kimbo and Kimbo still almost lost.

Premature stoppage.
Premature stoppage.
Yeah it really was. Thompson wasn't out (for once in his life)

Thompson is just a 'dong-and-dash' brawler. When the bell rings, he runs across the rings and swings wildly at his opponent. He was getting his ass kicked by Yoshida until he landed a couple big blows and turned it around. He beat Frye be basically being a younger version of Frye, but with a better chin and not so much wrestling. He was always a jobber, but he was put on a big show and was able to beat some even bigger jobbers as well as the two prevously mentioned veterans.

I saw the title of this thread, and thought "Dear God, are they really going to have a rematch."
I died a little inside.

I hate to say it (as i train at shootfighters) but Cage Rage is one of the cheesiest promotions going.
Butterbean actually gave a considerably better performance against Thomson than Kimbo managed.
I AGREE, STOPPED TOO EARLY

I could do that, too.
Cage rage needs a whole new set of announcers. Also, Thompson must be training a good few years now, what does he do when he show up for training?

Maybe he should have spent more time fighting amature bouts?

Yeah, it was premature. Still, I saw a lot of similarities between this fight and the Kimbo fight. Except that in the Kimbo fight Thompson ALMOST WON. lol So, according to Shaw, Butterbean must be one of the top 10 strikers in the world. *ahem*
Nice post, Raz. Good analysis.
The stoppage was a bit premature, but Thompson was going to lose (though he was ahead on points at the time). They were back to standup for round three and Kimbo was throwing combinations, landing 1-2 solid shots to Thompson's noggin each time that were dazing him badly. He was still standing and sort-of (hands drifting lower and lower) defending himself, but he was just going to suck a few more headshots before going down anyways. I was pretty suprised he did as well as he did though.

Kimbo may have been throwing combinations, but it's questionable how much power was behind them, because as soon as the ref stopped the fight Kimbo layed down in exhaustion. Kimbo was basically spent. You didn't see that from Thompson even though Thompson is notorious for having terrible cardio. I think if it had gone much longer Thompson would have won the round and the fight.
