I'm getting back into boxing and my coach teaches to have the leading hand in a loose fist right directly in front of the face with your thumb towards your face. I only boxed a bit in the forces but I was always taught to have the leading hand further out to my left like diagonally from my face. I knocked a few guys out in boxing so it worked for me at the time. I guess this new coach is more classic style or something.Which is right or best?

Whatever the coach you are working with right now tells you to do.
Otherwise, you are wasting both your time and his.

In a position that can best defend against your opponent's right hand hooks and crosses, while still being able to throw lead punches.
I prefer this front hand position myself.

He's lining up your lead hand so that when you jab, you're whole body will be properly fixed. I'm 40 and its taken me years to get this even nearly correct.
Ignore your KOs from the past, I'll wager those were slop-festivuses
