Whatever proves the most effective. In a fight, we are told to ignore round house kicks. It's a slap and the other guy will just shrug it off, a sidekick is the most powerful kick to our school. It may be fast but according to my school, its crap.
you need to stop taking instruction from this man.

Your sensei is a moron. Ever heard of Crocop?Hell, even punching is too fucking difficult. Class ends this may and i'm switching schools since I have to move, best left unspoken.

Uncle Phil, your teacher doesn't know what he's talking about. He might be buff, but you could probably kick his ass already yourself throwing some 'ineffective' straight punches into his face.
Listen dude, I've sparred with many different schools, to the torso and full contact, and the roundhouse kick is a highly effective kick. I have broken ribs with it! The sidekick is good for keeping your opponent back, but shouldn't be the only kick you use. That's fucking proposterous. After throwing it a few times at someone, they will be quicker to see it coming, and the one thing that sucks about the side kick is that you are in REALLY bad position to have your leg caught and get swept.
Anyways, your instructor is a moron because in any instance you might want to use the side kick, you could also be using the push kick to mix it up and keep yourself better balanced, and would probably be better off for doing so.
Does your instructor have a website? All this bullshit is starting to piss me off.

your sensei is a fuckwit, go watch a k-1 match.

There's not much to add to this thread that hasn't already been said.

The round kick is much faster than a side kick. As Alex said, watch any K-1 or Muay Thai fight. You will see plenty of Roundhouses and, I would predict, no side-kicks what so ever.

If your Sensei is talking about a flicky roundhouse in which you kick from the knee rather than with the whole leg then he is not kicking properly.

Your sensei actually implied that roundhouses telegraph MORE than sidekicks?!??!

Given the amount of setup positioning needed for a sidekick---aw, **** it.

Just listen to everyone else on this thread. They're right, full stop.

How many times do I have to tell you to get the hell out of your crappy school?

Is this your school btw? http://www.roberttellersoka.com/index.asp

The Question
5/02/2008 9:00am,
Another dilemma, my Sensei strongly believes that the round-house is total crap. He tells us the best kick you should learn is the side-kick. No kick is more important than the side-kick. The round house is ineffective, and my class agrees a round house is more like a open palm smack to the fact more than anything else.

Could someone please justify if this false?

I'm sure everyone else has said this. But here you go:

1) Your sensei is a fucking idiot.

2) You should leave that place if there are any other places to train.

From the link provided by WhiteShark, the "What is Ryu Te?" page:

"These are the techniques used by the ancient warriors of the Ryukyu islands".

Given those islands' history of being overrun by everyone from Japan's Satsuma clan to the WWII Allies, that's hardly a ringing endorsement.

Normand, you're an idiot. Do some more research on the ryukyus before you open your mouth. They were not allowed to carry weapons, so they developed hand to hand fighting techniques that evolved into many styles in practice today. Not only were they unarmed for the most part - of course they would be taken over. The islands are directly between china and japan and is an irresistable location for military operations in the area. Anyways - how many countries in the world have never been overrun by foreign rule?
