I know that I'm going to catch hell from you bastards about this---but I'm not very knowledgable about nutrition, burning calories, and similar stuff. The question actually involves my girlfriend. When I first started dating her, she was 5'4 and around 95 lbs. She looked very nice. In the past few years, she's still 5'4 and weighs about 120---I think that she has filled out and looks even better. She considers herself fat and is going crazy with dieting, trying to get herself down under 100lbs.

Here's the diet question---she's doing like 300-400 calories for breakfast (oatmeal/cereal), a Slim-Fast + a diet hot pocket for lunch, and doing a Slim Fast for dinner. Basically---her caloric intake is around 1000 or so calories a day---with semi-moderate exercise.

My problem with this is that I work 12-13 hours a day---and with her daylight hours job, she's wanting to be in bed around 830PM to wake up around 530-600AM in the morning.
So..when I get off work, I want to have an evening/dinner meal with her, maybe hang out---go somewhere for a while; whatever. She's now like, "You go eat somewhere--then we can hang out." She seems to think that if she eats anything in the evening hours, that its more likely to be stored as fat, and thus---she won't eat anything past 4PM. I'm telling her that it's unhealthy and if your body needs calories, it's going to break down fat/muscle if you're not feeding it right---thus, starving yourself during the day your body might tap into its fat and muscle reserves---it shouldn't matter when you take in calories; Hell I dunno---what to the weight loss/weight management wrestler/athelete types here think? Hell, I even offered to pay to take her to a nutritionist to help her work something out where we could at least eat a meal together---but she's hesitant because she's sure that she's right. What the hell, man...what do you athletes here think?

Bake motherfucking brownies.

Bitches can't resist the brownies.

Try to convince her that her static calorie burning rate is at least around 1700 (if she's moderately active) thus allowing her a meal with you so that she can eat and maintain her deficit, in a more healthy and sane way.

In short carbohydrates are really what you want to avoid in the evening.

Just don't feed her after midnight.

If I were you, i would keep pushing the Nutritionist visit.

Tell her that you're sure she's right in a general sense (regardless of the truth), but if she's taking it so seriously, it can't hurt to see an expert and get the best possible advice.

Other than that...

even on a small frame - 5'4" under 100lbs is an unhealthy weight. She absolutely should see a nutritionist, whatever way you pitch it.

You need to eat before bed, otherwise your body starves and you go catabolic. Eat slow digesting protein (milk products, cottage cheese is great) and complex carbs.

Pics please.

Also, any girl under 100lbs is not considered healthy normally. Hell most guys like a little meat! Healthy meat that is.

PLEASE PLEASE make sure that you send her off to a proper nutritionist..not some nut job (most of them are) who will put her on a 1200-1400 calorie diet. Take her to one who deals with athletes. And tell her lazy ass to let go of the 5 lb dumb bell and do some power lifting.

**** boss, John Berardi of precision nutrition is a strong bet in any case. His materials are excellent, and if she can't be convinced to get off the 1000 calorie diet after reading his stuff, she isn't gonna. Having a diet with that few calories is very unhealthy and won't contribute to positive weight loss/gain. At the end of the day, it all comes down to calories in - calories out = weight loss/gain, but meal timing (i.e. what syou're eating when) is running a close second on what defines your body composition. So as people said before in the thread - no quickly absorbed carbs before bed unless you just got done working out. I honestly eat at 9 PM almost every night before I go to bed and I've lost 30 lbs since December, and continue losing about 2 lbs a week.

This website has a calorie counter on it:

http://annecollins.com/calories/calorie-needs-women.htm

I got 1861 calories a day, so if she wants to lose weight, I would think that a healthy caloric intake would be about 1400-1600 calories a day (someone correct me if I'm wrong here). That's going to mean 3 ~500 calorie meals a day or 5 ~300 calorie meals a day.

For the love of god get her off that slimfast bullshit and get her eating some protein bars or some chicken breast or something. I had a girlfriend who did that anorexic dieting bullshit for years and it drove me nuckin futs.

Additionally, an extremely low calorie count will actually halt weight loss effectively.

she needs to forget about looking at a scale. tell her to build muscle and that muscle weighs more than fat. Tell her to stop losing sleep over numbers. They mean nothing unless you are trying to cut weight before a fight. If she wants to measure her progress she needs to go out and get some measuring tape. Go by measurements, not pounds. Girls are so obsessed with numbers...
