Last week we had a couple of guys coming over to take a bjj class.
One of em looked like he knew what he was doing during the technical part of the class, during rolling it wasnt much.
One of the blue belts asked him if he by any chance done some grappling before, the answer was surprising: e watches videos/dvds/youtube and then copies those moves with some of his friends.
He actually thought he could learn how to grapple properly this way.
At the end of the class one of the blue belts asked him if he would be back on friday, he didnt show up and it looked to me his ego was a bit bruised.
Anyone had similar funny experiences?
i knew thse people exsisted but never met em in real life.

I met one guy who possibly tried to do **** like that.

He was acting all hardcore/cool and **** until he got the **** beat out of him. His friend came, and since I was tired I pulled guard (not normal for me), and he was yelling at his friend to submit ME in MY guard. LOL. I was just in my guard thinking "this guy can't be serious, can he?"

im always in guard cos its nice and easy and im a lazy bastard who hates sweating, the blue belts say bjj is perfect for me.

except the warming up excersises, i hate those.
whats the deal with pushups man?!

pushups were invented by the nazis.

Oh and that homeschooled dud showed up in a sleaveless shirt, thats fucking groce, grappling with a sleaveless shirt.

But that way you can feel strong sweaty man-muscle crushing around you all the better Lebell.

its so groce man.
i used to play judo and at saturdayclass there was this guy who sweated extensively, if he had me in scarfhold i'd just tap out cos he was dripping over me like i was under the shower, it was horrible.

if you grapple at least smell nice, be clean and wear the proper clothing ffs.(forfuckssake)

Yeah, the guy that I pulled guard on was sweating all over the place. He was muscling around, trying to submit ME in MY guard. I was just thinking about what a great story this will be.

I let him try to kimura me and then I swept him.

The Question

So this thread is another circlejerk then?

its so funny when bigger/heavier guys come in and then get frustrated and surprised they cant submit a single white belt.

how are things at your school?
with us 1 out of 5or even 6 new guys stick around, the last guy to join us who stuck around dates back from 7 or 8 months ago.
n the meantime people came in and left, never came more then 3 times.

erm...I don't really see the problem in watching youtube videos and practicing them. So long as you actually practice using them while rolling and not just in a technical, "you sit here while I put my arm this way" sense...

AlphaFoxtrot51: Exactly my thoughts!

To me it seems as though he knows a lot of the moves, etc and against people who have hardly any ground experience / knowledge it probably works well.

But against people who have been doing it for months / years ... not so well. To me this seems akin to someone coming into my class as a white belt, knows how to throw some punches and kicks and gets his arse handed to him by a senior green belt.

Long story short the guy has had zero lessons and already knows a lot of the technical stuff when it comes to rolling. Gotta hand that to the guy.

a lot of the techniques shown on the internet are either crap or incomplete.
its just not the same as having the benefit of having an instructor with the proper knowhow.

thats just me ofcourse.

but ehr...in your case: why the hell should you wanna grapple when you have a rifle like that? lolzers!!11!!

I don't think there's anything wrong with it either, as long as it's a supplement to your training not instead of training.

thats a valid point, but it was really obvious he was kinda insulted or dissapointed that he lost with sparring, im always surprised when people react like that, i mean what do you expect?

Dunno, I just joined the place.

I'm brand new to BJJ, but I've been doing wrestling for a little over a year now. But from what I've seen, most new people don't stay long.

im curious wether this is a international phenomena or it differs from country to country.

No, I'm pretty sure it's international.

I can count the number of people I saw only at like 3-4 practices and then never again on both hands with only a couple weeks of training.
