I don't think that buddhists are any less violent overall than the followers of any other religion, but for some reason they don't tend to kill eachother over dogma. Even when buddhist monasteries would go to war against eachother in feudal Japan (which happened a fair amount) it was over land, alliances, etc, but AFAIK not over who had the true interpretation.

That said, they went to war with Shinto temples over religion and dogma, didn't they?

Errant- does the Frenchman have a Buddha form?

AFAIK, no. But this is something I looked into casually a long time ago, so I could be wrong.

The lady currently teaching me Japanese seemed to think that the Tengu myth probably sprung up due to warrior-monks and their fitter-than-usual masked antics, during the early days of Buddhism in Japan. I suppose someone who went out of their way to physically train, without having to participate in agrarian labour, would appear nearly superhuman compared to the average plebeian, and when he's wearing a funky mask, all kinds of weird rumours start.
