It is widely accepted in most circles, that our parents/caretakers mold the majority of our worldview, and values. Whether we are a product of nature vs. nurture on the path we take in life may be debatable, but, My Dad ‘s fingerprint on my life is undeniable.

When I was a small child, I can remember the big snowstorms e would have in Milwaukee. My Dad would come home from work, change his uniform, put his gear away, and then we would all would go out and shovel.

I can remember cars getting stuck in the snow, and my Dad would stop shoveling, and go help people get unstuck. This would happen about three or four times to different people, and Dad would bring us all along to help get people unstuck.

I can remember my Older brother Ken, complaining.
“Dad, were never going to get our driveway shoveled, if we keep getting cars unstuck!” my older brother fumed.

I remember my Dad looking at us and saying, “ Boys, I want you to remember this, A Man is never to busy to help someone in need.”

When we finally got finished our driveway, Dad would have us help him shovel out our 87 year old neighbor’s driveway!

I can remember my Dad and I going for a walk to the park, and a garbage can was on the ground and trash was all over the place. My Dad says” c’mon, Boyo, let’s clean this up.”

I can remember saying” But, Dad we did’nt make this mess!”

To which my Dad replied,”Boyo, any place you go should be better off for you being there, now come give your old Dad a hand.”

My Dad always told us that the devolvement of our character, was his most important concern, That to be honest, and to help those in need, was more important than being the best athlete or scholar.

My Dad was the kind of guy who lead a quite life of service, and demanded that we make the world a little bit better in some way.

I wish I could have went on Patrol with my Dad, I think It would have made me a better Policeman.

But my Dad would impart wisdom that influenced my Martial arts training, My tour in the Marines, and of course my profession in law enforcement, but more of this later………
