HUNTINGTON --

He looks a little bit like Chuck Norris, and has been hearing people tell him that for years.

But the similarities don’t stop with just the haircut and beard.

The similarities bleed over into physical ability as well.
A few minutes after midnight Wednesday, Stan Farmer used his ju-jitsu training to take the gun from an armed robber and prevent him from stealing cash from the register of Hart’s Corner, 546 4th Ave.

Farmer, 44, is an instructor of Manubi Masho Ju-Jitsu at the Tri-City School of Martial Arts in Chesapeake, Ohio. He has also twice been awarded by the International Martial Arts Hall of Fame Council for his abilities.

A man pulled a gun on Farmer and another employee Wednesday night and tried to rob the store, according to a Huntington Police Department report.

Farmer approached the robber and offered his wallet to him, the report said. When the robber reached for it, Farmer dropped it on the floor. While the robber was distracted, Farmer grabbed the gun and took the man to the floor, according to the report.

During the struggle a gunshot was fired into the wall of the store, but no one was injured, according to the report. After the shot was fired, the weapon was taken from the robber, the report said. Two other employees helped Farmer hold the man by sitting on him until police arrived, according to the police report.

The robber was unconscious and was turning blue when police arrived, according to the report.

Stephen Allan McCaffrey, 39, of 11386 County Road 1, Chesapeake, Ohio, was arrested and charged with first-degree robbery and possession of a controlled substance for having two prescription pills without a prescription. McCaffrey was being held in the Cabell County Jail Thursday night on $125,000 bail.

One less predator!! I suppose some people might say that they should have just given him the money etc. Unfortunately these days people often get shot after they give them the money. Its a tough decision and I am glad it worked out. One lesson to learn here though is the concept of field of fire.Try to control where the barrel goes as during a struggle the gun will probably fire. And high caliber rounds have the potential to penetrate through walls etc. and you have to keep that in mind.

If you grab around the barrel, most guns can't fire unless they are a revolver. Still .. yea, you have to watch out because maybe you get out of the way but he shoots your Mom. What then?

That was very risky, and could of gone very wrong.

He's lucky the guy was stupid enough to fall for that trick.

I'm not sure what kind of guns you're talking about, but all it takes to fire the round is for the hammer to drop; and on DAO pistols (auto and revolver) the hammer is internal. The movement of the action is only to cyle the next round. What's more, if you put your hand on the slide of a semi-auto, something's gonna give....and it ain't gonna be the slide. Ouch!

How come the TMAs here are not jumping in and applauding this gentleman? Isn't this an example of a TMA being effective in real life?

Anyone?

Actually grabbing the barrel as long as your hand isn't covering the muzzle (which tends to make large nasty holes s in your hands) in a good tactic so that can get the muzzle oriented away from you. If you manage to grip the cylinder on a rvlover it probably wil not fire as it cannot cycle to the next round. If you wrap your hand around the slide, the pistol can still fire, but even thiug oyu may ge tbit by the slide as it attemtps to cycle it is liekley that the bad guy will ojly get off one round becasuse an incomplete cycle will not strip a round from magazine nor ejec the spent cartrisge from the port.

All of this is risky, but it is a judgment call. The issue is simp,e with "3 strikes you are out" laws, the old advice about just give lhem what they want may run into the bad guiys idea to eliminate witnesses.... so it's a gamble both ways.
