They're the same thing technically, although one could say they came from another.

Progressive Fighting Systems is the name Paul Vunak gave to his organization to distinguish it from the JKD community. Technically, PFS teaches "JKD Concepts" due to the old JKD Nucleus loonies who wanted to copyright the name Bruce Lee.

Essentially, PFS is about realism, not style.

Above, except Rogue of course, is correct.

I think PFS is about the absolute perfect name you could give to your own school. Progressive Fighting Systems says it all. I don't think Vunak and co. are perfect but are some of the best.

With apologies to the beloved JKDChick, I don't think instructors should be using the name "JKD" to name their systems or schools or whatever. JKD concepts, maybe, but JKD outright goes against everything that Bruce was trying to teach IMHO.

But to the thread, dig up research on the "JKD" family tree and you'll see that Inosanto had many students like Vunak who went their own way and you'll see the connections back to Bruce Lee and his personal system of JKD.

Now STFU n00b.

it seems to me that pfs moved more into boxing and stuff whereas straight up jkd still does the paksao backfist stuff.

I'm in a PFS lineage and we do everything, all ranges, lots of trapping, BJJ, the whole shebang. But each instructor is different. I know PFS guys who don't trap and think it dosen't work.

Hey, I'm the first to say that Vunak is crazy -- he's a fucking loon -- but he can fight and he can teach. I love the guy.

How so? Is he "Crocodile Hunter" crazy or "Break Into Your Apartment Naked and Covered In Squirrel Blood" crazy?

Do you mind getting rid of the avatar? As a favor? I know that it's in good humor, but I can't help but be bothered by it. It's sort of a sore spot with me and my family.

I suspect ... some from column A, some from column B, depending on how much he's had to drink.

Mostly the former, actually.

(P.S. I LOVE Steve Irwin -- he should have been my brother, so we could both be charging around in the jungle, frenching poisonous snakes -- and I WILL defend his honor. You have been warned.)

I studied JKD for a little over a year with a "classical JKD" instructor who was very good. During that time I looked a lot at Paul
Vunaks tapes but never have trained with him live. I think Pauls tends to be more streetworthy and seems to have branched out with more grounfighting itself. I would recommend a tape they put out called the "England Seminar". It appears to condense Pauls core material in a very succinct manner. I thought enough of it that I taught it to my 16 year old son. Is his system perfect well no but nobody's is and it is a good start.

Dan Inosanto and Paul Vunak were some of the first students of the Gracies. It's one of the reasons BJJ is so HUGE with PFS instructors.
