I don't think he actually hit the hippy.
He dragged him outside (remember the old days?) and it seems the hippy figured out he was going to be thrashed and regretted it.

is this the same article that was in Esqiure?
this article just underlines the point that many people believe the rules apply to everyone but them.
and I hope he beat the living **** out of that annoying clapping hippy.

Yes, if you google 'In Defense of the Fistfight' it brings you to the Esquire website.

If I don't say/do something about a behaviour then that person is going to do it to others and eventually he/she too may be encouraged by the lack of response to increase the bad behaviour. Someone has to put their foot down at some point.
like my momma always said, "People treat you the way you let them!".
if you push far enough into someone's personal space, you can expect some instant karma, as they will become the 'divine agent' themselves.

And to follow-up on the last post:
"Not anymore. I would submit, Your Honor, that if someone is doing something demonstrably asinine, and I ask them to stop it, please, and they say, "Make us," they've entered a binding oral contract whereby I am permitted, even obligated, to try to make them."
(Emphasis mine)
If you're saying "crude" and meaning "drunk" than yes, sometimes it's better to walk away.
Steve - I'd say 9 out of 10 times the person being an idiot to me has not been drunk. Most of the time its low level enough to just ignore. I'm more likely to excuse an intoxicated person, but the ones who are sober are just asking for it.
DA - you walked away didn't you? Who would have thought you'd think such bad words?!

I didn't have to walk away.
He did.
(After intimidating everyone.)
What's interesting is the responses of the young blokes afterwards, e.g. "If he'd have hit you, I'd have seen to him," or "Mate, this happens to me all the time, it wasn't a problem." But they didn't say or do a damn thing when he was in their faces.
DA - well I'm glad you weren't injured. The one line I draw is if I'm with family/friends, I will say something right away or kicked him in the nuts and run.

People act like GIGANTIC TOUGH GUY assholes because they're pretty sure no one is going to call them out on it or hit them (see Bullshido, Fark, or any other web board for details). Once you give 'em a smackin', though, the attitude drops and suddenly they're going to call the cops because they know their 'rights.'
I'm older and don't hang around with that sort of crowd anymore, but I always remembered a story about my uncle on the subject. My uncle is a Vietnam vet and former prison guard, and once had one of his fingers bitten off by a genuine serial killer (Dale Anderson, a lesser known serial killer from the St. Louis area).
Once, an incarcerated biker decided he was going to take down a guard, and chose my uncle. My uncle is not a large man, but he kicked the dogshit out of the biker and kept going after the guy had gone fetal-position.
"I give up!"
"Sorry asshole, it was time to give up before you even started."
"What about my rights?!?!?!"
"I'll give you so damn many rights you'll pray for a left."
He's over twice my age and affects a grandfatherly air with the kids, but everybody knows better than to provoke Uncle Ben.

Let me put it like this it all comes down to your job (MONEY). If you can afford to lose your job and can land another in a day or so. Then you have the right to beat the **** out of people for being pricks. Its all about the Benjamins'.

I sent the author of the article (Chris Jones) an email c/o Esquire magazine letting him know about this discussion and received the following reply. Hopefully he might show up here.
"Thanks for letting us know! We'll pass it on to Chris.

Conan has always been a source of wisdom for me.
"Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing."
