luminar,

Please go to 6124 Busch Blvd, Columbus, OH, (614) 806-6359 and ask for Steve. Alternatively, go to 1250 Winsor Ave, Columbus, OH, (614) 645-7407, and ask for Buster.

If you could wear a Mike Tyson fan T-Shirt when you go, that would be a plus, as it would probably guarantee you some good sparring sessions.

Welcome to Bullshido!

hello my name is luminar i practice the martial art called the way of the mobile fist alternatively the way of the wolf. if you have never heard of it it is because i created it.

i started out training in tae kwon do and i hated it. the school was too casual and also i just didnt like the style. i had enought natural talent to take what i learned there and from tournaments i participated in to teach myself. i am 17 years old and live in ohio [...]

i participated in two tournaments where i won first and second place prizes in kata, sparring and board breaking. i made it to blue belt in tae kwon do and then quit for the above mentioned reasons. my martial art (way of the mobile fist) is very similiar to jeet kune do
Apologies if I'm misinterpreting, but from what you've posted, it doesn't sound like you have a great deal of martial arts experience. I would advise that you try and obtain further instruction under a legitimate teacher rather than attempting to create your own style: they have the experience you currently lack (again, I'm just going off what you've posted, so please correct me if I'm wrong).

Importantly, an instructor can also correct your mistakes, which otherwise you'll continue making and thereby entrain bad habits. Not to mention you could potentially injure yourself and/or others if there isn't an experienced eye supervising.

At the very least, you should follow jnp's suggestion and try sparring (NOT simply picking a fight) with someone who has a good deal of experience in something like kickboxing, boxing or muay thai. That will give you a decent indication of how effective your current training is, in terms of striking. For grappling, you should look into BJJ, judo, wrestling, SAMBO etc - anyone with a reasonable amount of experience in those styles will provide you with a good idea of your ability on the ground.

I'd strongly recommend you take a look at the FAQ (http://www.bullshido.com/articles/finding-a-good-martial-arts-school.html) on finding a good martial arts school. In general, signs to look for are a competitive record, regular heavy contact sparring and 'aliveness' (if you're unfamiliar with the term, Matt Thornton has a long article (http://aliveness101.blogspot.com/2005/07/why-aliveness.html) on the topic describing what it is and why it's important: he is the man most associated with popularising the concept).

Your self-created style based on 2 years of TKD will not work. Please forget about this stuff and train in a competition style art that has a well-developed and tested curriculum. Examples are BJJ, judo, wrestling, boxing, muay thai, sambo and MMA.

Blue belt in TKD takes about, What, 2 years at a 'good' school?

How long did you train in the TKD environment?

How often did you spar?

How many tournaments did you compete in?

What was the rule set?

How did you do?

How old are you, again?i trained their for 2 years i believe. the school wasnt really into sparring which is one of the reasons i quit. 2 tournaments. i dont know whar rule set. and as i stated i won first and second place in sparring, kata, and boardbreaking. and about my skill and my martial art not working. i never stated i was an extemely powerful warrior just that i have enough skill to have never lost a fight thus far and to develop my own system which HAS worked in the fights that i have fought in thus far. i definetly agree i need to find a school and develop my skills further but youve never even seen me fight so... yeah. and i am 17.

Luminar, you are in Ohio. Ohio has the best wrestling program in the country. You should go to your nearest highschool and ask to spar with one of the wrestlers in your weightclass. If you feel like a REAL badass you could head over to Ohio State and ask to spar with one of THEIR wrestlers in your weightclass. Please video and post the results.

Talking of video, you should make some clips of some of your techniques and/or training drills.

I agree. It wouldn't be fair of us to comment on your style unless we saw a video.

I'd be more interested as to how you wrote this post without internet access.

Dude you live in OHIO it's not exactly the third world. If you can find one friend with a laptop that has a wireless card, then find a STARBUCKS or a Panera Bread, or a Krystals, then you have internet access. I'm sure you can find a way to get some video up on youtube. If monks from tibet can get video onto youtube, so can you.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I urge you to listen to slideyfoot and virus (not his later post about posting a video).

I'm not trying to be an asshole but I think the video will just lead to people making fun of you.

Also, I'd urge you to reconsider your stance on picking fights or hopeing to get into fights. Fighting "on the streets" when it's not self defense (and that means last resort) or if you're not a police officer on the job, or something to that effect, is very stupid. It's dangerous, pointless and ultimately, doesn't really prove anything. We were all 17 once, but perhaps you can learn earlier than others.

Joining an gym which provides an safe environment to sparr, boxing or whatever, will be much more productive for you. Just remember that the aim is not to hurt your training partners, the aim is to learn to fight.
