KU student accused of using ju-jitsu on woman in violent attack Kansas City News
LAWRENCE, Kan. -- It's an attack that has much of Lawrence talking, especially students on the campus of KU. A 22-year old KU senior, Matthew Jaeger, is accused of attacking his friend, a 22 year-old Lawrence woman. Police said the man used his training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to severely injure the woman. Prosecutors are calling it one of the most horrific attacks in recent memory. The victim, 22-year-old Mary Biggs, remains hospitalized and is recovering from two surgeries and is preparing for more.
Lawrence police said at about 1:30 am Tuesday, Jaeger broke into Biggs' apartment. Police described the two as friends. Trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, police said Jaeger used the martial art to assault Biggs. Then police said he held her captive in his car. Inside his car, the police report said officers found an ax and a knife. At his arraignment, Jaeger pleaded with the judge that a lot of the details coming out about the attack were a big misunderstanding. But the Assistant Douglas County District Attorney presented photos of Biggs' injuries and he described the attack as extraordinarily horrific and one that left Biggs with severe wounds.
Because of her injuries and the nature of the crime, the judge set Jaeger's bail at $850,000 dollars. Jaeger is charged with aggravated kidnapping, battery, burglary and making criminal threats.
