British professor wins prize for bar-fight research

Wed Sep 19, 3:12 PM

STOCKHOLM (AFP) - Rowdy bars may no longer be quite as dangerous thanks to a British professor who won a criminology prize on Wednesday for his work showing how injuries from broken glass can be reduced.

Jonathan Shepherd, a face surgeon and professor at Cardiff University, won the Stockholm Prize in Criminology with his research into bar fights and glass-related injuries.

"Professor Shepherd's crime prevention work involved the development of strategies for preventing serious injuries in connection with violence in bars and nightclubs," a statement announcing the prizes said.

His work compared drink glasses and the different ways they shatter and has "led pubs in the UK to use the glass that causes far fewer injuries," the statement said.

He shared the prize with US professor David Olds, from the University of Colorado, who has developed methods to prevent child abuse.

Olds's research involved sending nurses to visit at-risk young mothers before and two years after their first child was born, resulting in fewer cases of child abuse.

The Stockholm Prize in Criminology was created in 2005 and is financed by foundations in the United States, Sweden and Japan.

Now if some eggheads can put some research into AIDs needles and flowing lava, we'll be in business.

WTF HAS THIS GOT TO DO WITH THE TITLE OF THE THREAD?? It's a well-known fact that MMA/BBJ does not (presently) work on the d34dly str33ts, precisely due to factors such as the bed of crushed glass that covers them (if your str33ts lack this element, they are not d34dly str33ts and your opinion doesn't count). If this takes off, the face of the str33ts will be forever altered: Bands of roving _unners will no longer be able to terrorise innocent BJJ black belts at will, steal their lunch money, etc. It will be a major socio-cultural-economic shift.

I don't understand the logic of alot of pure stand up fighters, even boxers.

"I don't need to learn ground fighting, i won't be taken down.''

Jesus christ, when doing wrestling in Junior high/highschool, were people just brain dead and never paid attention?

Here are some ideas to get you started:

Quick cool lava, made especially for the streets
and Self destructing drug needles, for the discriminating junkie.

Where did the lava argument start? Did some one actually use that argument? I mean I could see glass or needles but lava? Come to think of it I must not live in the realz part of town since I have not seen many needles or glass on the streetz.

The real arguments tend to involve broken glass and HIV-infected needles (also, as seen in the Anti-Grapple thread, gravel and 120-degree pavement). Lava is hyperbole in order to highlight the ridiculousness of the whole thing.

That's unless you live on the really d34dly str33ts.

What about those grapplers that think, "I will choke him out, I don't need to learn stand up"?

I don't think anyone in MMA think either way anymore.

Relating to the article, i don;t see why they dont just use plastic 'glasses' in all bars. They had them in one place i went to last week

Okay, so lava was added for fun. I thought since some of the "TMA" arts are like older than recorded time that there was more volcanic activity when they were developed. :)

Also I went exploring last night. I live near 4th and Real, but if you go down a few blooks you get to the intersection of Real and Deadly. Man that street corner was covered in glass and needels...even glass needels. Eveyone seemed to be traveling in groups so I could only assume if I fought anyone I would be fighting EVERYONE. I guess I live on the weak side of town.

It's a matter of class and style. Glass is considered more upper class than plastic, just like crystal is considered more upper class than glass. So you have to read your clientelle; for some people this distinction might be important, for some, not.

Besides, if you are a bar owner, maybe you would like to rather spend more money preventing fights rather than minimizing the effects of one, should it occur. I know if I was a bar owner, and if fights were exceptionally rare in my bar, I would not go out and replace all my expensive glassware with plastic cups when the first fight comes around.

Where did the lava argument start?.

I think this is more of concern to the Inoue's and Kajukenbo folks...
