I was having an exceptionally slow day at the office, killing time, when I happened on to this clip on the old youtube. For those that wonder why some of us have always ahd a soft spot for Kung Fu, even if we don't actively practise it, you need look no further. Of course it's not grounded in reality, but the guy that fights Master Killer star Gordon Liu (Pai Mei in Kill Bill, for you younger guys & gals) was Wang Lung Wei, a real life Triad enforcer who doubled as a movie villian. Wang, according to my Chinese brother in law, was shot in the face for telling HK singer/Madonna wanna be Anita Mui that she had the face of a dog. Mui was tight with a bunch of other gangsters, who overheard of the slight and killed Wang promptly. Too bad, she was kind of fuggly, and sadly, she succumbed to cancer with in a year after.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWlLAki99Gw
I like the little jig the dude in black does at about 3:35.

I don't think most kung-fu people really believe that a fight looks like the movies. I'd say they probably believe it looks like the techniques they drill: (or otherwise they wouldn't do them).

I love that video. You can see him do a palm strike.
Yes, this will be moved.

Hmmm. I study the style that Gordon Liu's character is poorly portraying in that video. The techniques look all shiny and stuff, but the applications in the movie are a bit off, to say the least. No, we don't think a fight looks like that. The stances aren't meant to be used like that, and his dragon claw was too tiger-esque.
But wasn't it nice that they both left their arms out there for each other after attacking? Gordon Liu would have been MURDERED if the villain had some _ing _un under his belt, haha. :ingun:

Those board breaks were pretty badass actually. Especially the first one, where the guy didn't even miss a beat.
And at least they're making contact. Of course, why the dudes in these videos can't ever gear up and do it at more than like 10% is beyond me.

They have something going there. Maybe they do sparr, but it's not filmed, who knows. I, for one, would certainly NOT want to get hammer-fisted or slapped full-force by that guy.

when I was a kid, I used to hammer fist things when I was mad, so I wouldn't bash up my knuckles...
In those drills, the guys just hold their arms out once the first contact is made...that would not simulate anything like a fight...the guy didn't even grab the guys clothes to pull him off balance. None of that would translate into a fight well...not practiced like that....give those guys some pads, and go at it. He should be striking curved surfaces, if he's simulating hammer fisting the skull.
I love kung fu movies, but wouldn't slappy tappy someone in a real confrontation.

Hi, you do know this is funny on so many levels.

Maybe they realize using Gi's in kung fu lead to dumb stories about your history?????
Oh and all those board breaks weren't special. Take a careful look at those boards.

Breaking anything except soft foam with your fingers is fucking hard.

What I meant was that it looked like forms, not fighting, obviously. I get it, movie fu, or whatever. If you somehow gathered that I thought his fighting looked realistic, correct, or anything close to it, then THAT is funny.

Movie Fu exactly. It was your critique of "bad form" considering where it is derived.
No, I'm not talking about Gordon being a master either.
