The Parent Trap
Ghost Dad
Are we there yet.
Daddy Day Care
Dr. Do Little
Lion King
Name a kung fu movie.
My father is hero
New legend of shao lin
Drunken master
the series Kung Fu
any shao lin movie
in many chinese movies the old dude is bad ass, and in many american movies (and tv shows, especially lately) the old dude or father is portrayed as a bumbling idiot. The wife and children constantly disrespect him. Compare Al Bundy to Ward Cleaver. I assume you're a dad, surely you notice this trend.
I'll give you Lion King though.

So, you really need to set down what you are trying to express.
Okay obviously you only watch one genre.
You need to remove Drunken Master.
Kung fu TV series (not a movie) is American so you just owned yourself.
New legend of Shaolin? Okay you are trolling now. You got me.

An Oldman being a badass, which many American movies have, wasn't what you said. Al Bundy vs Cliff Huxtable would be better since they are the same time period. Yes, I watched both. So, you had the bumbling idiot and the respectable father. So no, I didn't see a trend. I saw different versions of fathers.
name one american movie that teaches you to respect your elders (or they will place several hot teacups on you till you can't move).
Colors
Boys in Tha Hood.
He Got Game
On Golden Pond
Kramer vs. Kramer
Godfather
Modern:
BraveHeart
War of the Worlds
Unbreakable
Since you wanted serious movies not comedies. Even though that's what half your list contains.
Short lists that were semi-popular movies there are more.

Perhaps the multiple-attacker scenario in kung-fu movies is a cultural misunderstanding.
A Chinese viewer would see it as an entertaining exaggeration, but we saw it then as the real performace of a kung-fu fighter.

Most reasnably intellegent people who think about it for a second will understand that its an entertaining exaggeration, the problem lies with the idiots who see this and dont realise the amount of coreography that goes into a scene. And they are taken adventage of by people who want to make money.
In general Kung Fu is viewed as what it appears to be in the movies because most people dont practice MA. People who reserch, train and practice in Kung Fu, (or indeed any martial arts), will come to undertand that the movies are planned, real fights aren't.
The Films gave a bit of leverage and marketability to the people who want to take advantage of the people who believe that its possible to win against 15 people, but if the films weren't there they would just market differently, not stop all together.

Ask me about BK Frantzis. I have a second hand story from a top student of his at one time.
Okay. What about BKF?
I take confort in the fact that kung fu movies are closer to real kung fu than the Rocky movies (excepting the recent one) are to real boxing.

Not two take away from his skill but, some of his China trips are greatly exaggerated.

Pshaw.....Real Boxers can take hundreds of consecutive full power shots to the head and never get knocked out.

Yes, but you have to shake the sweat out of your hair, spit some blood, pound your hands on your chest and go "C'mon, is that all yus got". Otherwise it won't work.
Back on topic:
Back during hte 60s and 70s hwo many people in the states knew anything about China? For some people the only China they knew was the China portrayed in the movies.
Don't forget there was no internet and cable was at it's infancy. In large cities there was usually a China town but by this time the people there were becoming more and more American.
Also it is probably safe to say that the majority of Americans at the time considered Sonny Chiba's Stret Fighter the same as other Wuxia or Kung Fu flix.

Most Kung Fu movies have a revenge theme geared toward allowing as much fighting action as possible. Period. For all but the very best Kung Fu movies, the plot exists only as a device for the action. In many ways they are consturcted along the same lines as porn. "I must avenge my master" is the KF movie equivalent of the pizza delivery man.
There are exeptions, of course. But your average Shaw picture (and I am a huge fan of all the 5 Deadly Venoms movies!) is a Kung Fu exploitation movie. Trying to say they, in any way, "teach values" is absurd. The only value they teach is general asskickery.
. The only value they teach is general asskickery.
Are there any other values?
