Greetings,
I'd like to hear opinions (of people with knife sharpening experience) on the DMT Aligner diamond sharpening set.
http://www.dmtsharp.com/press/aligner.htm
I know I should have asked beforehand and decide on buying later, but I just bought myself this thing yesterday. I had nothing serious at home for knife sharpening and it's about time I learn to do it (yeah, I know it's a shame I've waited for so long).
So, did I make good business with the Aligner being my first ever sharpening system or not? (Bought it after consulting with the shopkeeper in a store where they know me after buying several knives there for myself and friends...)
If not, what would you recommend?
This is the best sharpener set I ever used

You can sharpen knives to razor edge and even sharpen razor blades (in case you go all emo)
I would get an old fashioned stone. Granted, it doesn't work as well, takes a while to learn, and can be messy if it's a wet stone. However, if you wife is the timid sort, you could win any argument by just taking out your knife and sharpening it.
Do I need to mention that I was kidding?
The sharpener you got is excellent.

I lucked out on the timid wife.
Anytime I hit her she hits back and she can run faster angry than I can scared.

Why is that lady wearing a shemag instead of a burkha?

I use Japanese waterstones for sharpening. Nothing beats hand sharpening if you know how to do it.
Get 1200 grit, 1000 grit and 800 grit.
My friend turned me on them a few years back and I can even get those cheap ass $5 kitchen knives to cut as well as those really expensive $300-400 knives that my dad has. Granted they don't keep their edge as long.
Learn how to sharpen correctly and you'll be fine. It's also very therapeutic.
Is this were we wait a few days and find out you've never sharpened a knife in your life or something?
I have always just used a traditional Arkansas stone and honing oil.
Hey Tonu, you should try it out and let us know if it works.

Mouse pad + high grit sand paper. Drag the blade across 10 or so times, then the other side 10 or so times.
High Speed and Cheap Knife sharpener. It's what I use on my Wusthofs and my Wotan.

Nah, I actually know how to sharpen a knife. Maybe I'll even make a video on it.
Yeah, the spyderco sharpmaker set is great. Easy to use and very effective. Mine is getting a little old and doesn't work as well as it used to. I can't seem to get the steel particles out of the ceramic material any more. Time for new rods, I guess. It probably didn't help that every time I got it out while I was in the sandbox all my friends would ask me to sharpen their knives, too. I didn't mind and it was a good way to de-stress. You'll find that people who outrank you seldom bother you when there's two rows of knives next to you, the sharp and the dull and you've been sharpening for quite a while.
I had someone look at one of my knives a few months back that I had sharpened on the sharpmaker tell me that it was dull. This was after I shaved a patch of hair off my arm with it. Before I had a chance to say anything he'd drawn it across his forearm, handed it back to me and said, "See?" I went "huh", obviously confused and put it away. That was about the time their arm started gushing.
Edit: BTW, I wish I had video of that.
Right as it sank in that he was bleeding, you should have punched him in the face.

My first attempt to sharpen my Tom Brown Tracker and Smersh 4 failed miserably.
But I'm not giving up and decided to repeat my attempts until victory.

When I got my tracker it said that I can send it back to them to get sharpened. I use it now for a not of hacking and shopping so I'm not too worried over a razor edge.
My cut my seatbelt before I burn to death tanto can can be used to shave however.
Heres a question, my new seal pub has a serrated edge on it. How does one sharpen those?
SFGoon, I just couldnt bring myself to put the Burka on the old lady, their creepy.
