In Illinois you need to be over 18 and obtain a FOID card in order to buy long guns, ammunition, and reloading supplies. 21+ is required to own a handgun. I believe that Illinois is more restrictive regarding gun control than other states, so ymmv, but no matter where you are I'm pretty sure you need to be 18+.

You can get a FOID card at any age IIRC, which means you can own and transport, but purchase requires you to be over 18.
