Hopefully Fatherdog will read this as he seems to be very knowledgeable on the NJ scene. If someone knows him tell him about this post.
I need some help picking a school in NJ?
I am not really looking to compete(maybe grappling, not sure). I am looking for fitness, well rounded(mma, bjj, standup), some practical self defense, affordablity and convenience(somewhere near plainfield area)
I was looking into Alex Wilkie's in Bridgewater. I see he does a nice array of stuff. Do you know of his background in BJJ and standup or anything else(belt, levels, etc.)?
Any other schools you recommend?
Thanks a lot for the help
Anyone else feel free to chime in too.

Some BJJ schools here: http://www.bullshido.net/forums/showthread.php?t=47789
Also, check out the list here: http://onthemat.com/school_database.php?mode=search&keyword=&instructor=&country=Country&state=NEW+JERSEY
Also, what are your priorities for training? Would you be open to try judo, boxing, etc?

I really want to do some submission ground stuff mixed with standup, probably muay thai, kickboxing. My main problem is affordability mixed with convenience. If I find a school close to me, it is like $130-140/month and if it is cheaper, it's far away. I just can't do that much money a month right now.

I wouldn't talk, Staten Island is like that poor ignored part of NYC that nobody cares about. Besides most Staten Islanders hang out in NJ more than NYC. Poor you. hahahaha.

Are you looking to be a well-rounded martial artist? Because if you are, keep in mind you'll also have to train some takedown-based art, a la wrestling or judo, unless you find the rare BJJ school that does lots of takedown training, not just a few half-hearted uchi-komis and such.
What does your price range look like, and what distance are you willing to travel? And how many days a week are you planning to train?

Probably like 2-3 days a week, travel not over 20 minutes, and yes takedown stuff too.
Wilkie's seemed to have everything and is only $88/month unlimited, I just don't know his exact background and who he trained under, although I did hear he is or was a Royler student for a long time has some mma fighters.

Ah, I recognize that site, there's been a thread on Wilkie, although I don't know if there was any final conclusion: http://www.bullshido.net/forums/showthread.php?t=34835
P.S. Make sure to use the search function!

cool thanks. I must have searched "Wilkie" and not "Wilkie's" so it didn't show up.
Have you ever heard of "PM"?
It's a brilliant little feature that allows you to contact members directly without starting an entire public forum for what is essentially a private message.
You can do it by clicking on the PM tag next to the Post History tag, right below the post.
No need to thank me.

I'm not thanking you actually, I tried to PM fatherdog and it didn't let me so I started a post asking for his advice. Happy with my explanation wise guy? Nice of you to waste a post telling me that I am wasting a post.
