Women's martial arts? If they aren't judo or BJJ they suck.

No dude!!!! He means weapons martial arts :tongue3:

To the OP, that depends. Filipino Martial Arts are highly regarded (most of them), and there are respectable research groups out there reconstructing legitimate medieval martial arts (which are not to be confused with kids and not-so-young kids playing medieval renassaince fairies and furries). There are also practitioners of fencing and stuff like that in this site.

It all depends dude. When it comes to weapons martial arts and their practitioners, it all depends - The less the gap between what these groups claim to be doing and what they actually do, the more respect that they get.

There is a difference between a guy who practices fencing with the clear understanding of what fencing is, and another guy who uses a foil to teach the dealy, ancient art or European Ninja Sword-fu, of Hunnish origin, passed by Vikings by word of mouth and secret rituals, tested on the battleground, and 100% applicable for women to use against daylight rapist in the middle of the street full of lava and broken glass.

That's more or less how things get evaluated here.

--- EDIT ---

BTW, weaponry as discussed in this site also includes modern firearms, training and usage.

I think he actually means Western martial arts. Although individual opinions vary, its not the name of the art or where it came from but how you train. Western martial arts like boxing and wrestling are well respected, whereas older western arts can be more suspect due to a lack of live training and LARPing tendencies. WMAs do have the advantage of not utilizing chi or meridians to explain how something should work.

What the hell you idiot, W.M.A. could be anything, how the **** do you want us to give our opinion on something we don't even know?

I think it means Western Martial Arts. You know, gunslinging and fisticuffs.

Actually that'd be fucking great, start a franchise in Korea. I'd love to see a bunch of Koreans walking around bow legged in stetsons and chaps, bleating on about how rustling is not about stealing cattle, but about developing spiritually and emotionally as a person.

It's time to get our own back!

Edited: because I'm a spaz. Thank you for making a permanent record of my spazziness DJR btw. :tongue5:

That would be kind of like the martial arts version of this:

Tibetan Teen Getting Into Western Philosophy
October 20, 2004 | Issue 40•42

LHASA, TIBET—Deng Hsu, 14, said Monday that he is "totally getting into Western philosophy." "I've been reading a lot of Kant, Descartes, and Hegel, and it's blowing my mind," Hsu said. "It's so exotic and exciting, not like all that Buddhist 'being is desire and desire is suffering' **** my parents have been cramming down my throat all my life. Most of the kids in my school have never even heard of Hume's views on objectivity or Locke's tabula rasa." Hsu said he hopes to one day make an exodus to north London to visit the birthplace of John Stuart Mill.

I'm pretty sure the original poster is talking about historic western martial arts. Short version: if they spar, they're cool. If not, they're a bunch of larping fairies.

Of course, I'm biased :)

The O.P. lists "beginning longsword" as his style field, so the question would refer to (historical) Western martial arts. Short answer, as Jeffrey said, since most WMA are heavily into pressure-testing (sparring, full contact fencing, etc.) they tend to get the Bullshido thumbs up.

Western martial arts like boxing and wrestling are well respected, whereas older western arts can be more suspect due to a lack of live training and LARPing tendencies.

Try not to confuse LARP with WMA. Whereas the historical (Medieval, Civil War etc.) re-enactment movement of the '70s spawned a lot of the present day interest in Western martial arts, WMA as a serious martial art, divorced of any role-playing elements, has been around for about as long as modern MMA.

It could be quite alive. This looks promising:

Friday Night Fights

The Main Event! Come and see the top sporting duelists the city has to offer. Take a chance and see if you can stand with the best. Regular tournament ladder fights, challenges, special exhibition bouts, and an open floor for fighters to spar with each other. Rapiers, singlestick bouts, wrestling, and other gentlemanly pursuits to participate in or just watch. Spectators encouraged!

can't know for sure, I would lean towards the side of legit, as they do mention what to bring as far as contact with a weapon.

however the fact that they mention the sca, makes my neck hairs rise.

The fact that they openly accept challenges makes up for it by a long shot.

I just know from experience that a mere fencing mask is not good enough sparring equipment to go at a very high intensity with a blunt (blunted steel).

I would want to see the level of it but I'm leaning on the side that there wouldnt' be anything wrong with it except trying to attaract a wider audience perhaps and not scare people away.

I strongly think my bias comes from the fact that thier advertising mentions sca.

I've been leery of that joint, but i've been a weapons guy for a long time and wanted to check it out. Of course, I also have dog brothers training not too far from me so I probably shouldn't even bother with that place.
