Judo wins against five robbers

Pretoria - A 69-year-old 6th-Dan judo instructor from Pretoria literally put his life on the line on Monday when he fought five robbers who had threatened to rape his wife to death.

The robbers told Hennie Pretorius that he was a "white boer" and that they were going to shoot him.

Pretorius was leaving his home in Queenswood for the shops about midday when a man asked him to put some water in his plastic bottle.

When Pretorius went to fill the bottle with water, another robber who was hiding in the bushes rushed at him. He was struck on the head with a firearm.

The judo instructor threw one of the men in a judo move, but another two joined in and hit him with their firearms.

There were five robbers altogether.

Heard muffled shouts

Pretorius was carrying his house keys and a panic button around his neck, but the men ripped it off before he could press the button.

Pretorius shouted at his wife, Lorraine, who was inside the house, and the robbers pulled a plastic bag over his head and tried to choke him.

His wife heard his muffled shouts and went to the security door to see what was going on.

One of the robbers then tried to open the door with Pretorius's key.

Lorraine hit a panic button in the house and the robbers fled with the house and car keys, and about R650 cash that was in Pretorius's wallet.

Pretorius said: "I shouted, 'You can kill me, but you're not going to get near my wife.'

"They can shoot me. I'm 69 years old and I've had a good innings. They told me straight: 'We are going to rape your wife until she is dead.' "

"People say you should carry your revolver on you, but if I had it on me, they would have shot me with my own firearm. They totally overwhelm you."

Pretorius said he got in a few good shots and he suspected that two of the robbers were as sore as he was on Monday night.

'Judo helped me to focus'

He was planning to give his judo classes as usual that evening.

"I still have two classes. I'll just have a shave and I'm not going to mention it.

"If I didn't do judo, I would have folded. It helped me to focus," said Pretorius.

Who would want to rape a woman who is probably in her 60's? I'm glad that dude took those robbers out, they must be seriously sick to want to do something like that.

The old man is the winner by avoiding the "worst possible scenario", due to his training the Judo. The opponents outnumber him and wielded a weapon, which would render any style of martial arts useless.

I was kind of surprised when I read the title of this news article. There's another article covering the same event where it tells a completely different side which is less than favorable. The first article protrays this guy as a hero while the latter as a lucky victim. Check it out ->

An elderly Queenswood man was viciously beaten up by five men at his home after trying to do a favour for a "thirsty" man waiting at his gate. Hennie Pretorius, 69, of Corry Street was attacked at 1pm on Sunday. Pretorius did not open the gate. Instead, he went to the back of the house to fill up a bottle for the man who claimed to be thirsty. As he was doing so four armed men who had been hiding in the shrubbery attacked him. They hit Pretorius in the neck with a gun - but he is a qualified judo instructor and retaliated.

But being outnumbered, they started hitting him in the kidneys and eventually wrestled him to the ground.

One of the men grabbed the bunch of keys around his neck and tried to open the door while the other four carried on attacking him. They demanded that he open the house and kept saying that if he did not do so they would shoot him and gang rape his wife. Pretorius's wife Lorraine, 70, who witnessed the incident, had gone back inside the house, locked the doors and set off the alarm.

The alarm scared off the suspects. They jumped over the palisade fence taking with them the house keys, the remote control for the gate and the car keys.

Laura-May Eigeman said her parents have been traumatised by the event. "My father is a little bit sore, but very shocked. They are both shaken," said Eigeman. She was allegedly warned by the Villieria police not to tell the media about the incident because there was "no need". Eigeman said that according to her parents, the police's reaction time was excellent.

That sounded pretty brutal. The second article was probably going for some shock value with the descriptions of the 69-year old being struck in the neck and kidneys.


But being outnumbered, they started hitting him in the kidneys and eventually wrestled him to the ground.

I'm not sure what that means in South Africa, but round here it means the attackers were being outnumbered.

The robbers told Hennie Pretorius that he was a "white boer" and that they were going to shoot him.

If they catch these guys, does anybody think that they will be charged with a hate-crime?
