Look, y'all know I'm not a mindless basher of the style. But is anyone denying that a majority of TKD schools in the US are belt mills that teach watered down crap that does a poor job of preparing one to fight (in or out of the ring)?

3/29/2007 11:39am,
So far I'm still getting a bunch of ranting that my generalization of TKD is somehow wrong. What I have yet to see is any real counter argument to my generalization. I really have no idea how someone can have more years of experience with TKD in the USA and not have seen at least as many crappy dojos as I have. The conclusion I'm currently drawing is that most of you have mediocre reading comprehension and are somehow drawing the conclusion that I've stated something to the effect of "All Taekwondo Schools are like this:" when in fact I have not. What I have said is that if you pick a Taekwondo school at random from the phone book it will display some subset of the characteristics I mentioned. If it displays characteristics from either of the second two sections then you should be aware of those negatives and make your decision accordingly. You should also be aware that a randomly chosen TKD school is NOT going to teach you to fight effectively. It simply will not. That does not mean that the ART of TKD is not useful for fighting, that is a different debate entirely. But even the most effective art in the world is completely useless if you don't train it properly. My conclusions are based on over a decade (13 years as mentioned before) of direct experience with hundreds of TKD practitioners from all over the USA, of direct experience at TKD schools in 3 different states, multiple schools in each state. If that is not a reasonable sample size to base my conclusions on then please indicate to me what a correct sample size is. "Every TKD school in the country" is not a valid sample size. Even the people who are saying I don't have enough experience to draw these conclusions haven't actually come out and said "I've been to A, B, C, and D schools and they train in X manner, which is common throughout Y region or Z organization." If you can't do that then STFU about it. My generalization will stand until someone can point to a significant block of counter examples. I can name schools and instructors that are examples of my point. I can point to ENTIRE organizations that embody the things I listed. All I get from you guys is whiny bitching.
Screw you, too. Read my post again. While all of the TKD schools where I've trained (nine schools total) have been WTF affiliated to some degree or another, I have checked out quite a few non-WTF schools when I've been dojang shopping. Of the WTF schools, none of the ones that I have trained at match your description of crappy point sparring or the how long it takes to start sparring.

Okie-dokie, then.
Perhaps, in light of that, any article written should start with a recognition of that, and then go on to talk about what to look for in a good TKD school?

The article, was supposed to be an objective article on the pros and cons of TKD. By starting an article with TKD sucks in general, but here is what to look for to find a good school, only tends to make the article subjective and basicly fruitless since you already informed the reader that it generally sucks.
Are their craptastic TKD schools? Yes. Are there a lot of them? Yes. However, look at the statistics of schools. TKD schools are everywhere so naturally with a higher number of schools you are going to have a better chance of finding more sucktacular schools. If there were just as many BJJ schools or Karate schools, I would be willing to bet that you would have just as many of those sucking ass as well.

Then, shouldn't the point of any article be to teach people how to tell the difference? Also, I'm not quite sure why drawing a conclusion (e.g. many if not most TKD schools suck) equals being subjective. I for one, think there's planty of objective evidence to support that claim.
There are, of course, many reasons why someone might study TKD. And any article would have to take that into account too. Not all of them are because someone wants to fight in K1 or be the baddest kid on the block. We all bag on WTF sparring, but if someone wants to compete in the Olympics, a WTF school with a heavy focus on competition sparring would be the way to go, for example, and would be a good school when judged by that criteria. Although, as an aside, such a competition focused school would probably do a better job of imparting all around fight skills than some so-called self defense oriented schools. But I digress...

ya! matt is totally right.after reading the article i do not want to learn TKD.Perhaps someone could teach newbies how to tell the differance between suckatacular and decent schools. Btw, whats the difference betweeen WTF and ITF?
