Uh ... you aren't Shuma... at least don't think so.
:smile:Please research the term "Triumvirate."

I can't see this being all that different than "chili dog", "mission control", "plum sweep" "brabo choke", "ippon seonage", "kesa gatame", "sasae tsurikomi ashi" etc.
... heck, how many people coming on Bullshido still ask "what is a LARP?"
If you want to wade into a sub-culture, learning a few of the terms shouldn't be a big deal. However, I agree that CMAers shouldn't take the "french" attitude towards those struggling with what is essentially just grammar and syntax. A friendly "SEARCH FUNCTION FUCKTARD" will do.
Well yeah. It's not just DONT SPEAK CHINESE AROUND ME YOU ****, I just want people to clarify what the hell they're talking about.
yeh all that ****, I can't understand it either. If I want to talk about a technique thats execution is not obvious from the name then I'd be so kind as to describe what it is at least a little bit :)
No question and I might argue that people that wouldnt, well, maybe they dont really know either.
But also explain exactly how to throw an uppercut in words on this forum so everyone can understand. It is harder than it seems! So in many cases, it could be the medium that is the hinderence.

Yeh but once again you all know what an uppercut is. I'd be surprised if anyone on this site didnt know what an uppercut was.
I'm going to guess that 90% or better of the people on the site dont know what a pi chaun is.
hell, i still dont know what it is because I only saw a picture of an old dude doing his hands in a funky pose.

Luckily if I ever need to explain something esoteric I would be kind enough to make a video rather then spend 10 minutes trying to write a vague description :)

HAHAh I will find you a good Pi Chuan on youtube if links are allowed, easier to see anyway.
Excuse the music, but here is a good example:

Jab, cross, hook, uppercut, etc are only understood by their supposed "descriptive" names because you chose to learn them a long time ago. In the real world outside of MA, they are barely acceptable descriptions of the actual technique.
If that's false, kidspatula wouldn't be so pissed at people who think they know what a "jab" is and so many idiots wouldn't equate "hook" with a dumb haymaker (my personal peeve).
I think most of us "LOL, CMA!" practitioners will be reasonable about it here ... if others do their part and make the required effort on their end. (Otherwise, what some might dismiss as smug is really just us "LOL, CMA!" people not bothering to waste the effort on someone who doesn't really give a ****, anyway. I don't think that's all that different than those who use similar terminology to what I mentioned previously.)
But the language is important. the only reason it is esoteric is simply because as you mentioned, you have not seen it. Not because folks that like to train some of this are trying to keep a secret from you or keep you out.
This is true for everything, why should Xing Yi or boxing or anything else be any different?

I actually just kind of picked up the names for those techniques while growing up. I had a vague idea of what all that stuff was before setting foot inside any kind of martial arts class. I couldnt preform them or discuss the technicalities in depth but like I said, I had a vague idea. "pi chaun" is not a term for a technique one just picks up through years of video games or movies in general life.

Please research the term "It's fucking late and I'm just giving you **** because I'm still at work and bored waiting for jobs to complete. Why? No reason. I'm just practicing my obnoxious prick impression so one day I can grow up to be like Shuma whom I adore."

Agreed, if I am discussing this with a fellow Xing Yi man, we might say, I was workin on Pi, Beng, Pi in my starring the other day. Ok, it means nothing to you, but to us, it is clear.
Just as if you told your grandma you were working on cross, uppercut, uppercut, hook. But talk to another boxer and it is clear. I dont study western boxing so I am sure my ideas of them are not what a boxer might use them.

Certainly I can see the utility in using the original language. When i talk about german swordsmanship I use terms such as zornhau and scheitelhau and hangen, etc. But I dont use toss those terms at people who I know have no idea what they're going to mean.
I mean come on guys. Whether joe blow knows exactly what a jab or cross or uppercut is doesnt matter. Everyone on this site has some type of idea of what those terms mean. I dont reasonably expect anyone on this site to know what a zornhau is so if I wanted to discuss a zornhau I would explain what I mean by the term.

Like I said, I don't mean to tell everyone to refrain from speaking Chinese, just try and clarify what you mean. I'd think that'd be something you'd have to do even in the CMA world since there are 1 billion different styles of kung fu.

Sure. But with the one link I sent you, it is not nearly as esoteric or jargon, right? It still may be strange or the like just as watching someone throw an uppercut doesnt mean you can or understand it, but it is a starting point.

Whats funny is that the horrible video of the pi chuan I posted give a better idea of what exactly the technique is then the pretty video with the nice music you posted.
