I'm really disapointed with my campus Jiu-jitsu club. Most of what passes as authentic Japanese Jujutsu is just an ecclectic hodge podge of gendai arts. Most folks haven't experienced the real deal. Not that I'm saying it's the "end all, be all" (no MA is) but the real stuff is not Judo.

Not to pitch you softball questions bro but elaborate please.

I see. Wow, my club really must be a find.
Virus is always welcome to my JJJ school.

Do most JJJ schools not use Randori? I know the other 2 in my area don't. This is common?

I suspect that if he had t3h r33l JJJ, he would know how to spell jujutsu.

From what I know of koryu arts, randori is not very common (too d34dly) and is one of the principle departure points for Kano from koryu jujutsu.

There is a thread on spelling jutjutsu - jujitsu in the TJMA forum. There is some dispute within the community.

True, and I was one of the posters in that thread, but he used the even more archaic and innacurate Romanization "jiu jitsu."

If that's where I think it was (a park and museum in the middle of Moscow), I was there several times this past spring. The place is awesome.

Survey says? XXXXXX

The Japanese have had two phoenetic scripts (kana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kana)) since Heian period (c. 800). The problem is that even though a few fairly scientific (from a linquistic standpoint) systems of romanization were developed in the late nineteenth century, for the most part they were not well disseminated for common usage. As a result, most Westerners and Japanese used a hodge podge romanization of Japanese by how they thought things sounded. In none of the three most accepted systems of romanization (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%C5%8Dmaji) would the second vowel in jujutsu be represented by an "i" and all use a "u." In all three of these systems, "i" is pronounced as a long "i" as in "eats" rather than a shor "i" as in "its." "Jujutsu" is the romanization using the Hepburn system, which is the most commonly used system of romanization amongst non-Japanese scholars.

All that said, the reason I brought this up was because Onmitsu was bitching about supposed traditional (koryu) Japanese "jiu jitsu" schools that are really just a hogdge podge of gendai (modern) "jiu jitsu." I found it ironic that he would be bitching about this without being able to correctly romanize jujutsu.

As for the term "jiu jitsu" itself, I feel that it most accurately refers to modern Western offshoots of Judo or jujutsu, such as Gracie Jiu Jitsu, and that the non-standard romanization is a reflection of the fact that these styles are a derivitive and not a direct transmission of a traditional Japanese ryu-ha (lineage).

Ok, now that I have thoroughtly geeked up this thread, please resume the light banter.
