What is up with the "Four Elements" thing that some ninjas are into? The four elements is a greek concept. Do Japanese or oriental cultures have it too, or is it western mysticism combined with asian bullshido?

Actually, based on the top level being a "Void Ninja" is sounds like they got it from Stephen Hayes with was in turn based on a set of Kihon Gata from Gyokko Ryu. Being, Earth,Water,Fire,Wind and Void.

I’m going from the recent ninja turtles tv series but I believe its five elements in Japan, earth fire sky water and metal.

Actually it the 5 elements and their are two sets.


The more "popular one" became popular due to Stephen Hayes who based its ToShinDo system (Bujinkan offshoot) on the Sanshin No Kata of Gyokko Ryu.
Gyokko Ryu Sanshin No Kata

Chi No Kata (Earth Form)
Sui No Kata (Water Form)
Hi No Kata (Fire Form)
Fu no Kata (Wind Form)
Ku No Kata ( Void Form)


Its Kihon (basic) Kata of the Ryu-Ha however, when Hayes came back to the states he expanded the concepts to put all his techniques under these names, like "Wind Form #1, etc."

The other set is the Gotonjutsu forom Togakure Ryu which is not important to this thread, but they are different and blend more into the Chinese Elemental structure.

Regarding the element ninja thing... my friends and I did this with our gamertags in Halo and Halo 2.

We had Devil Ninja, Leaf Ninja, Sand Ninja, Plasma Ninja, Poof Ninja, Ninja Ninja, good times.
