"Kajukenbo leader discriminates against overweight people in the arts!"

Professor John Bishop of Emperado's Kajukenbo and one of his students, Dan Weston have spoken disparagingly on the topic of overweight martial artists on public forums, highly insulting to say the least and very hurtful. They have focused on one very respected senior in a system outside of Kajukenbo but also mentioned others although not by name. This can all be read on this forum under the thread: Tracy Kenpo Master.

The martial arts, besides a system of self defense, is also known to teach character, ethics and a respect and sensitivity toward others. Is this not what you tell parents when they enroll their sons and daughters? or are we just being hypocrits?

A martial arts instructor of the ranking of an 8th degree black belt professor who is a self proclaimed representive of his system, who appears to be the spokeman for it's founder, Adriano D. Emperado, is clearly setting a very poor example for others to follow. What parent would want to enroll their children in a Kajukenbo school after reading this vicious insensitivity and childish elementary school-like behavior displayed by Professor Bishop and his student?

What does Professor Bishop do when a mother or father come to his school with their child who is picked on by bullies because he or she is overweight? Does Mr. Bishop and Mr. Weston make cracks like, you'd better sign a liability waiver in case you kid slips on grease from the cheeseburger he brought to class (the cheesseburger/grease example was taken right from the Bishop/Weston posts on another thread in reference to an 8th degree black belt of another system).

Mr. Weston, is, from what I understand, not only Bishop's #1 son but a school teacher! You read this right, a teacher in our public school systems. No wonder why we have the problems we do in todays' schools with teachers like Weston leading the way. I wonder what Mr. Weston's superiors would think if they read his posts on some of these forums, especially Bullshido.

I can only say this. If this is condoned by Mr. Emperado and the Kajukenbo organization then I say to all parents, please take this into consideration before enrolling your child in a Kajukenbo school! If Mr. Weston is indeed a school teacher as he states here on the west coast, then we, as parents, should find out where he is teaching and make his superiors aware of his conduct which is very unprofessional, immature and hateful for a man who calls himself, 'teacher'.

Very sad day for friends of the arts.

1 - There is a big difference between an overweight student and an overweight instructor, especially an overlerly critcical overweight instructor with delusions of being a bad ass.

2 - Whats with the whole "professor" title for a martial arts instructor? Last time I checked, common usage of the title was for someone with tenure at an academic institution. No one calls the football or track coaches "professor" at colleges or universities.

As far as this instructor goes, he's entirely right to demand this of his instructor grades. Some people use MA as a way to get fit and lose excess weight. It would be hypocritical to advertise your art in this way and then have an overweight instructor teaching a class.

In short, it's his organisation, he's not doing anything illegal.

As far as being a public school teacher goes, it matters not. Teachers are entitled to hold any personal opinions they want provided they retain a sense of professionalism at work. If you have evidence that he discriminates whilst at work please present examples, if not yours is a baseless accusation.
