was anyone else surprised that Sylvia has a ground game? I know I was.

I ran downtown to go to a friend's bday party so I left right after the Sylvia Fight. Fortunately the bar next door had the fights. I don't normally watch a fight with such an uneducated crowd and I was surprised I was the only one who thought GSP was going to win. This guy kept turning around and looking at me like I didn't know what I was talking about. The last time he turned around I said "GSP is going to KO him with a kick just watch (forgot to mentioned met one of my fighters downtown and was talking to him). The guy turned around and shook his head with a "yeah what do you know look on his face" just as GSP delivered the KO. I swear it was uncanny. I think I might have ESPn.

x2

My respect for Sylvia has gone way up.

Me last night after GSP knocked out Hughes:"Oh my god, he gave him a Cro Cop! He gave him a fucking 'Ethnic Cleanser'!"

First Hughes: Was it just me or did it seem to anyone else that Hughes wasn't taking the fight seriously. I mean, he was laughing and joking around in the ring. Overacting those groin shots (though, to me, it did look like he actually got tagged in the replays). And then he kept stepping back and dropping his hands like he was a batter stepping out of the batters box. One time he checked (or dodged) a leg kick, and then stepped back like he was taking a break to celebrate and GSP kicked his other leg right out from under him! WTF??

Second, Monson: Feel bad for the guy. He made a fight of it, and stuck to his game plan. But my read ont he whole thing is that the size disaparity was just too much. The only criticism I have is, why didn't he try to work the clinch (with his low center of gravity and all) instead of repeatedly shooting that single from, like, 5 feet out?

Last: Did that one dude in the last fight get koed by a LEG KICK? LOL! It looked like he never felt pain like that before in his life. Dude looked like he was crying afterward. But the guy from Holland trains with Ernesto Hoost, so what did he expect?

Tim Sylvia tried more submissions than Monson!

I think Monson put a lot into the fight but his tactic from bringing it to the ground seemed a bit questionable... all his shots from like six feet away, and always "by themselves" - I think he could have done better if, once he realized that a single-leg from across the cage wasn't going to work, he stepped in a bit closer, threw some straight shots, and then slipped in for a clinch or a double-leg. Too one-dimensional on his shoots, IMO. He needed to make some adjustments when he saw it wasn't working.

Got this on youtube for anyone who wants to see it. Better watch it quick before it gets pulled down.

I greatly enjoyed watching Hughes get kicked in the nuts twice. I think the first one may have legitimately hit him in the nuts, I think the second one may have been a little bit of acting. Congrats to GSP, IMO a truly worthy champion.

Arg, you posted it first, just watched it. GSP dominated. And those were both Thigh shots. Hughes looked a lot better against Penn.

Sylvia is a boring fighter, he's a boring champ. He just let Monson come at him all night and played defense. It worked for him, but it was boring as ****.

I couldn't figure out why Monson didnt push the clinch. Try and force him to the fence for something. And he kept trying to pull gaurd when his shoot would fail. Did he think that would work?

Well, it sorta did, once or twice, excep that he wasn't able to do much from there anyway since apparently Tim Sylvia's size was not 'a disadvantage' once they got to the ground (gasp!).

Now that St.Pierre is champ there is a good chance that his title defence could take place in Montreal. Quebec is one of the few provinces that doesn't have shitty regulations in place that all but quash the chance of MMA bouts being sanctioned.
I see a road trip in the future..
I like Hughes and am sorry he lost in a way, but Its good to see a fighter of such renown toppled by another Canadian. We haven't had much luck with Boxing( well, with heavyweights anyways) up here over the years so it is nice to see a fair number of decent MMA fighters coming out of the country now that the sport is taking off a bit.

:pity:

I saw this fight in an encredibly noisy club, with multiple distractions. I sorta thought that Monson should have won a decision, I'm not saying he got robbed I was hoping somebody could tell me quickly what slyvia really did to clinch it? I saw Monson land more punches and demonstrate better ground skill, but I'm not that knowledgable about judging and **** like that. Can somebody enlighten me briefly?

Bear in mind, no sound and not able to sit and really watch as closely as I would have liked.

This is awesome, I going to nutride Karate so hard right now. When ever someone says anything about karate point or no contact sparring, I'll just post a vid of this fight. Also, since I'm a green belt in Enshin which is a more evolved form of Kyokushin I think it's a pretty safe bet I can take Matt Hughes. Now if a pure boxer becomes a UFC champ, I don't even know what I would do, I get the vapors just thinking about it.

Seriously, I was really surprised that GSP won, I thought that it was going to be Hughes by GnP.

Edit: I mean, I knew GSP-san was going to show the power of Karatedo. After he hit Matt Hughes with 2 Uchi Momo Geris, I knew Matt Hughes san wasn't prepared the power of Karate. I couldn't hear audio, but I am assuming that GSP san gave a loud kiai after that Jodan Mawashi ger, then finished the fight with a kime.

dude, no.
if anything, i would give monson the 3rd round.
sylvia defended everything monson gave him all night, and then pretty much controlled the 4th round on the ground.
all they did in the 5th round was walk in circles and piss big john off.

elipson is right:
snoresfest.

He was screwing around at first(hughes) but after that he clearly took the fight more seriosly, that super stupid confident look on his face for all his other fights was gone.

One of Matt's strenghths is that he doesn't panic and knows all he needs is for his opponent tp make 1 mistake and that he can finish a fight at any time.

One of Matt's weaknesses is that he waits for opportunities to come instead of pushing for them.

GSP doesn't make mistakes anymore or gas or slow down his attack.

I think Matt can come back and have a better fight but he has to change his game plan and force his will on GSP more

That said GSP will almost always beat him

Too little too late.

And re: Monson winning a decision;

Yeah, you must have had a pretty wierd view! I was rooting for Monson but that was a clear decision for Sylvia.

Monson's takedowns got stuffed like mad, and even when he got Sylvia down, He was only able to land a tiny bit of GnP. Sylvia did a great job of controlling the ground situation and even came almost sorta close with some submissions of his own!

By the last round it was clear that Sylvia had more Gas and had done more damage, while all Monson had to his name were two semi-successful takedowns and some pretty negligible ground punching.
