There are many articles about how to find back the effective Aikido, or how to make Aikido an ultimate fighting art.

But what if we just all overestimate Aikido?

I believe that Ueshiba was a good martial artist who knows enough about fighting, and of course he knew that he couldn't do again what Kano Jigoro already did, transforming the old schools of Jujutsu in an fighting art that could survive the changes of modern times. Maybe Aikikai had his reasons in soften Aikido down, and it is only we the dreamers and LARPers who are searching for the ultimate art which can let us become the ultimate fighter without getting heart?

Daitoryu is nowadays just one tiny little branch of koryu jujutsu, but Aikido is a common known "ma". Why? Maybe because it teaches something different, which is only an isolated aspect of the martial arts.

Most ma nowadays have sporting competition as their "battlefield", but Aikido does not, there is no place to really use Aikido, so why only focus on learning how to fight? Some say it's only ballroom dancing, but it undoughtable has its roots in martial arts.

And even if it's right that Tokyo Riot Police learns Aikido, I don't believe that they do it without developing fighting skills from Judo.

Just a thought... I've seen a few ballroom dancers. They are fit, lean, toned, strong and balanced. Throw in a little striking and groundwork and you might have a good MA. (And leave behind the funny costumes.)

and lots of hot chicks. Ballroom dancing has all the hot girls. If I were single I would forget about MA and concentrate on Ballroom

Aikido? Ineffective? Unpossible!

Like I said ask them

So, in otherwords you have no bloody idea what your are writing about.

Glad that is settled.

Why is it that the Tokyo Rioy police are the first line of defense for BS aikidoka trying feel better about their horrible training? I'd bet 99% of the people that spout about the riot police have never even seen them, let alone seen them do any kind of technique they would recognize.

Indeed, why?

Probably goes with the LARP'ing.

Tokyo riot police mostly bash people with truncheons.
So do riot police in other countries.
I'll bet the Aikido bit in their training is limited to heavily modified Aikijutsu wrist or arm locks which differ from western police wrist and arm locks only in name. Politics.
To my mind Aikido is not suited to shielded armoured truncheon-weilding riot police work.

But . . . do they have . . . the . . . MAGIC PANTS?!!!

As your embarrassing failure to defend a position demonstrated, you should not assume anything.

Most of the Aikidoka at the local dojo I live near to say they've done other martial arts before, like judo, karate, kickboxing and what-have-you.

Indeed, the running theme is that most serious Aikido practioners I've met have backgrounds in other arts - even the Aikido instructor at the University of Winchester was a boxer in the Navy first.

The unspoken truth, then, seems to be that you need a firm foundation in fighting before you even think of dabbling in hakamas. Or floating in a circular manner.

Meataxe: That video made me die a little inside.

There, our poster boyz:

I could be wrong here, but after graduating from the "Senshusei" course, these boyz get promoted and they may be employed in the diplomatic corp... e.g., protecting foreign dignitaries.

Yoshinkan'er are rarely associated with Hakama. For assuming we don the Magic Pants (tm), you will be punished. 100 bunny hops around the dojo for you.
