I was extremely disappointed with the lack of willingness to engage and the dependency on sutemi waza as a primary attack. I understand that some people use some sacrifice techniques because the set up ground attacks if they fail (that is good Judo/BJJ/grappling) but there was almost no time given for groundfighting. Most people resigned themselves to laying in guard or holding their collars for dear life.
It looked like poorly performed wrestling takedowns with none of the in depth strategy that happens in other high level grappling contests. Looking like wrestling is not a bad thing if it has the ground portion of the wrestling match as well.
My main complaints are
- Ippon is sometimes call for throws that have less impact than a player that pulls tomoenage
-Stalling by using the bullshit stand-up rules
-5 min time limits are too short for elite, well trained athletes
-piss poor standards for ground technique is making osaekomi the most popular method of newaza win
-over emphasis on grip fighting
-reffing is horrible
**** the olympics, **** the spectators, **** television programming. Make Judo a martial art again. I would like to see Ippon for someone getting the **** knocked out of them (visibly stunned) or a submission (tap/unconscious/broken bone).
I have trained and done randori with good Judoka that can kick ass at every range but the rules in competition do not reflect the skill level that some players possess. The IJF could **** up a wet dream.
*I only saw the portions that were broadcast by Japanese TV. Basically all of the Japanese matches.

This may be a kind of derail, but what do you think is the likelyhood of Submission grappling events being televised in the near future, also does anyone think this will have an effect on the rules. Personally, I'd love to see sub grappling on TV, and I think that seeing the action on TV would be alot better than just seeing the fight from one angle.

When brazil has the olympics, they will get to choose a sport, that sport will be BJJ, but rather than having 2 different Gi grappling arts, they would combine them and have different rounds of either judo followed by bjj. then combine the points.
One can dream anyways.

Judo has been on the slippery slope for some time now. The rules need to be changed along the lines that Mongo suggested.

While I was unable to watch the World Cup at all (It wasn't on here ;_; ) I agree with all points made in generalizations to all Judo competitions nowadays. Now I'm not saying we gotta find t3h r34l Judo but these rules gotta go. As an art, judo rocks, as a competition is totaly blows compared to some others out there, especially with the new "easy ippon"
This happened at my local. 3min fights ( was still tired as hell at the end but, my overweight-outofshape-ness is not the issue here) less than 5 secs to gain osaekomi, takeda is still counted even after great chokes are in place but the other guy is holdin' on the tap.
(One instance I tapped out to sankakyu, however it had passed 5 sec to gain osae and we stood back up) That plus no armbars 'till brown annoys me.

I know what you mean. There's a brown who occasionly comes to our club who "doesn't do ground". Don't get me wrong, he's fucking awesome standing, but groundwork just doesn't cross his mind, he trains to win shiai and that's it.. and you don't need newaza for that.
In the short time I've trained I've come to love judo just for the sake of judo (something about it that's addictive), but I hate judo players like that. What's the fucking point of learning half an art, being half arsed. There's a BJJ guy who comes in (there's a SBG place 2 minutes down the road) and rolling with him is awesome, because he doesn't just turtle and go "lol, attack this nub", he's well... awesome. I've learned a lot about being pro-active on the ground from him, just from being owned (although he's not a ****, he does show you **** as well).
I don't mean to say all the guys in my club are like that, most of the blacks are as good as BJJ guy, but they could get away with not being, and that's a crying shame IMHO. What's a guy to do? (answer: train BJJ as well, hee hee, I''ve been converted).
Please forgive my lack of articulation, I'm currently innebriated, I'll come come back in the morning and try to make a clearer statement. Probably.

which countrie's players did you obsreve fighting as such? But yeah, gaurdwork is very minimal, and those players who are considered newaza specialists tend to have developed skills more akin to turning the oppenent, looking more like par terre in freestyle.

I saw matches with the Japanese against French, Korean and one other team that I don't remember.
Women was Japan against the US, France and one other team I don't remember.
Women took 3rd and Men's placed 5th.
All of the teams played similar mainly because it seems to be the most convenient from the horrible rule set.

Personally I prefer Judo to BJJ but I fully recongnize that BJJers have the superior ground game.
I would like to see some sort of combined ruleset come into play for Judo. I still would like the throwing aspect to be an important part of the match but I would also like to see more time given to the ground game once the throw is completed.
Maybe something along these lines.
- Points awarded for throws only.
- Once on the ground, someone has to catch a submission within 2 minutes to end the match or they are stood back up.
- Total match time 8 minutes (6 minutes maybe?)
- If neither competitor is submitted at the end of the match, winner will be determined by who has the most points.
I am not entirely clear on all Judo rules so some of this might already be in play. I think by giving points for throws only it will force Judoka to focus on throws in their training, but by allowing a fight to end by submission will also force Judoka to train submission defense and application. In this way if a Judoka is losing on points he still has a chance to win by getting the submission before time is up.
Unlike BJJ there will be no points for ground positions.

I think a good new ruleset would be as BJJ but awarding a win for a clear hard ippon as Mongo describes.

I think that would be good also, but I still don't want to see points awarded for ground positions like they do in BJJ tournaments, submission or nothing once your down there.

I like the positioning aspect of BJJ comps. It retains BJJ's applicability to "t3h 57r337" / MMA, because superior positioning is key for striking. I'd like to see Judo incorporate this nod to striking. It's also a wonderful cure for turtling and back-giving.
