On last night's news at about 11:00 on Channel 4 (I think it is Asahi Television) they showed the Japanese Judo Team cross training with a Brazilian JJ Team in Newaza.
To summarize what I saw.............. There was no successful footage of any of the Judoka hanging with a BJJ blackbelt, even the newaza expert on the team. While this was depressing for a Judo nutrider like myself, it made me cream my panties about the possible large scale crosstraining and possible rule reform that may come as a result of the world's strongest Judo team looking to BJJ to stimulate ground skill.
The Judo guys then trained no-gi with the Japanese Wrestling Team and the program ended.
Its a sad day for Judoka but a glorious day for us that are doing both.
Pretty neato. If I did the Jet program I probably would have picked up Judo.. since that is more commonly offered (I think) in the rual areas, where I would have been sent.
The TV channel is Nippon Television on channel 4 and it was the evening news. It ran from 10:54 until about 11:30.
I'm still looking for a copy of the video on the net. Its slow going 'cause my knowledge of Kanji is the suck.

I think its a GREAT day for Judo and Judoka, not a sad day. It's wonderful that some judoka are reconsidering the importance of newaza (although I understand the Kosen judoka have kept a lot of newaz alive). Historically, I thought judo was supposed to be 50/50 throwing and ground techniques. And, oh yeah, let's not forget that atemi (striking) was once also a part of the curriculum. It's too bad sports and Olympics have twisted judo away from a well rounded martial art. After all, this was the art that in 1882 (?) was able to beat top jiu-jitsu specialists from many schools.
In my own case, I took judo for about a year and a half at Valley State College around 1964 - yeah, 1964 - and I loved the ground work, I got surprisingly good at it for a skinny, underweight, short kid. Problem was, there just wasn't much ground work in judo, and in order to get to the ground work, I had to get routinely pounded into the mat from throws from people who outweighed me 50 or more pounds. So I dropped out.
So here I am today, mid-50's, and I have re-entered...via jiu jitsu. The armbars and joint locks scare me shitless - I only have memories of chokes and pins - but I am learning to deal with it.
It's too bad judo was in the dark ages in the '60's in the USA - very little newaza, rules that discouraged good mat work.
It's GREAT that there's the glimmer of the hope of change.
(Meanwhile I'm hoping to eventually see some judo thows at my dojo instead of just wrestling take-downs - a lot of the people have a judo background and decent rank; but then we'd have to learn to fall a lot better!)

Did they show standing? It would've been really poking a hole in my nutrider gas tank if BJJer were able to hang with Judoka standing up better than Judoka hanging with BJJer on ground.

My club is going to share space with the judo club, whose class occur at the same time as ours (its a sport center).
I really have hopes that if i signed up for judo too, i could simply walk back and forth across the gym from judo to bjj, and bjj to judo.
It might be a tad too idealistic to happen, though.

What? Strolling out in the middle of a class into another? Doesn't sound like a good idea.

I didn't see any. Then I am not too optomistic on many people being able to stay on their feet against guys like Suzuki or Inoue.
The problem is, there is a lot of cross training in high level BJJ but there is much less in high level Judo. There are a few, Rhadi and the Camarillos but I think that there should be a larger effort to do both.
That is all because I do both and I obviously believe I am correct.

The only thing it showed was Inoue taking down one of the open weight wrestlers. It did show the Judo Team doing the conditioning. It looked like some of the Judo guys were having a hard time but they were getting through it.

Yeah, like i said, its a bit too idealistic too happen.
We'll just settle at looking at them funny when they do ground techniques. And theyll look at us funny when we do standing techniques.

You should've done it. My sister did Judo for a year or so, when she went through the Jet Program.
