I have a permanent bruise on my left shin from TKD. It was about five years ago, but I don't remember how it happened (sparring duh). I do remember that it swelled up to the size of a baseball and I was out for two months. On my other shin I have a permanent bump from a bruise (That one was weird - I somehow got it in BJJ). Kinda like a dinosaur bump or something . . . .
Sifu Emin - Did you see that?
Me - (gasping) No, but I can't breathe yet.

all kidding aside, it is most likely a weak blood vessel that breaks easy, aka a hematoma.
it can happen by flexing a muscle or getting hit in the same spot over and over. if there is tenderness they should see their doctor, but the chances are there will be nothing wrong unless they have a blood vessel disorder. this happens frequently in older folks. all you have to do is touch them and they develop one.

fatalvision? wtf?

i know this woman who had something like this, you didn't even need to touch her, her veins would all come to the surface of the skin and she had to have an operation every month to put them back in deeper....
then again i could be wrong

Fatality Dragon,
Since no one here is Medical Doctor, I would hasten to say that this is the wrong forumn to gather information from. =o)
It could be anything. I have soft tissue bruises on my shins from Muay Thai, been there over a decade now. Some you just keep with you forever.

Jamoke,
I said Medical Doctor, big difference between Doctor and a Assistant.
Anyone getting medical advice from anyone but a Doctor needs their head examined.
I have this nifty new thing called Health Insurance. It lets me go to a real Medical Doctor for any problems I have. Thanks anyway Jamoke.

Dark bruising is a collection of de-oxygenated blood that has pooled under the skin. It IS a hematoma. It's not such a great thing to have stagnant anaerobic blood just sitting there. Definitely see a doctor.

I am not a doctor either, but I have an EMT-B certification. See a doctor for bruises that won't go away.
